Lou Reed Has Passed....... :(

I heard the news at 4:15pm on Sunday and was devastated. The Velvets are my favorite band, and comprise in large part the soundtrack of my life. And Lou's made many fantastic albums as a soloist that are now classics.

It's just been confirmed that his liver disease was the cause of death. I do know he first contracted it while at Syracuse U. (my alma mater). There was an appearance by him about a month ago where he's so jaundiced that it doesn't even look real, and it was obvious that he wasn't long for this world. Still when I heard it, it hit me like a freight train. Still getting over it.

There's a famous quote by Brian Eno to the effect that while only a few thousand people (then) bought the first album, every one of them went out and formed a band after hearing it. They've been called the single most influential band in rock history, with the exception of The Beatles. Googling his name shows the first 11 pages devoted to news of his passing.

Here are a couple of my faves:

In her case I think everything she does is calculated. She is not as dumb as the media thinks she is. Her father is still on some board for decency and children at Disney. If what she was doing was not planned and accepted then I don't think Disney would keep Billy Ray on the board. She is the new Modonna and Britney Spears. Time will tell whose path she ultimately follows as it could still go either way. I am thinking Madonna myself. Her father is not a bad strategist.

It sounds like Lou mellowed out and became a nice guy in the end. If you read about him in his prime during the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol years.... Well, let's just say that I didn't listen to much of his music for a while after reading about some fairly repulsive stuff (even by rock and roll/punk standards). But no matter, all's well that ends well.
