[Rubicon] Mass moving in Fleets

Hi all

I've recently been working on some fleet changes and those changes should be in the newest Sisi build. I want to use this thread to collect feedback on those changes and if you encounter bugs or something, please let me know! Smile

In Retribution, I added the ability to drag people around in fleet to move them (as explained in this old devblog)
When I was working on those changes, I really wanted to also add the ability to multi move people to make it easier to manage large fleets, but that was way out of scope then. But now I have made those changes Smile

In my devblog thread and in a thread I started here in the test forum (as well as on Twitter), FCs that manage large fleets asked for the ability to load up stored fleet setups so they wouldn't need to type in the names over and over, so I've added that, although it's in a bit simple and limited form.


Details:

Load fleet setup:

  • A new option, "Store Fleet setup", has been added in the header menu of the fleet window. Any member of the fleet has access to that option
  • A new option, "Load Fleet Setup", has been added to the menu for fleet bosses/commanders
  • When storing a fleet setup, each Wing has to have a unique name, but the squads can be unnamed
  • When loading up the fleet setup, we use the wings that already exist if they have the same name, and add squads to them if needed. We never delete or rename a squad, only add them (as long there is space for it).
  • If you try to load up a fleet setup and some squads or wings are not added, you get a message telling you which wings/squads were not added.
  • the fleet setups are stored on the server, per character
  • the stored fleet setup is just the number of wings/squads with names, we don't store who is in each wing or anything to do with the characters
  • currently it's not possible to delete a fleet setup, but I should add that soon


Other things

  • the fleet comp window will now display what ships docked pilots are in
  • the fleet comp window now lists which wing/squad each member is in, and the list can be sorted by that column.


Multi moving

  • Any character listing (from chat, contactlist, fleet, guestlist, etc), can be dragged to multi add/move people in squad
  • it's now possible to multi select from the fleet comp, and move people in the fleet by dragging them onto squads/wings (edit: this is now fixed)
  • it's now possible to multi add people to the watchlist. The limit is still 15, so if you try to drag more to it, some will not be added
  • multi moving never makes anyone a commander... for that you need a single move
  • When multi moving people into a squad/wing, only one window refresh should be triggered, and some minor changes I made should result in fewer window refreshes.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

In the spirit of improving fleet management there's two things folks would like to see. Could you tell us the feasibility of them?

* Jumping from watchlist.

Blackops and titans can be added to watchlists, but when they open the bridge you have to click on the ship itself in space/overview. This is annoying and can be error prone. Using the watchlist would solve this but is not currently possible.

* Fleet bookmarks

It would be amazing if a commander could load up one of your stored fleets, and have a set of fleet-specific bookmarks.

No more wasting time messing with bookmarks. Everybody has the same thing - because the FC already set it up, and saved it.

That would, quite simply, be epic for fleets.

Could we save a "fleet setup" as a default?

E.g. I have Fleet Command 3. I would like to, as a default, create a fleet with 3 wings, each of which has 5 squads, and make myself the fleet commander. Ideally, every time I start a fleet, I'd like it to be set up like this.

Please fix the watchlist functionality. These changes you've made are nice for FCs, but what would benefit everyone in the fleet would be having full functionality when clicking on people in the watchlist.

It didn't take long to locate the tracking beacon, deep inside the quarters for sleepin' They thought they could get away Not today, it's not the way that this kid plays

When I read the title I was secretly hoping for ship mass to affect the warp speed of fleets, but this is also excellent.

So I thought about this over lunch. We know the fleet system is crap. We know it's broken. We know people are used to it. But what if fleets could have a new 'mode' that people can turn on, similar to free mode. Manual guys can continue to operate as before.

Automatic fleets - You automatically take a place at the top of the fleet, making as many squads/wings as you have skills for.

During this mode, squad and wing warps are disabled. This is the main reason people hand pick wing commanders, generally, so a spy can't take over.

You can click a button to reorganize a fleet to automatically put people into wing/squad positions based on their skills and bonuses. Command ships -> wing commanders; favored ships for squad commanders that are more likely to live and be in system, so avoids interceptors/frigates/scouts.

At any point, you can reorganize the fleet again, or turn off automatic mode.

Difficulty involved is completely unknown, I constantly hear about the poor state of affairs in CCP code, but that doesn't make me more happy to hear.
Automatically creating squad/wings to your level -- *should* be easy
Reogranizing - Maybe difficult since I don't know how easy it is to send 55 commands to fleet to move people after viewing the composition list
Disable wing/squad - New flag, so most likely difficult.

Unhappy with what the automatic thing did? well, flip back to manual, reorg a bit, and you're happy. What is normally a 5 minute process of getting squad commanders, yelling at your dudes to take spots, etc, becomes easy. Small gangs are easier, huge fleets are easy, if things go horribly wrong, you're boned, but hopefully it's on your FC's head, and not on the individual members who don't know how to do fleets anyway.

Want to start getting fancy? Name wings based on what bonuses they might get. If they're in a Claymore, maybe say 'Skirmish bonuses'. Or, go down to the module level on those guys and see what they're running, with or without mindlink. Or start doing automatic shuffles as people leave and/or join. Then again, people might get stuck on gates etc.

Is it possible to also have the motd be saved?
As an incursion runner/FC this would be of more significant help than just the fleet squads/wings

You should be able to drag a person, wing, or squad from your fleet window, and drop them onto a target on your overview making them warp there at zero.

Thanks, the improvement to the watchlist is much needed. I'd still like to see the fleet window recieve some treatment. Drag and drop would be bawlsome. Being able to move various fleet members into and out of squads, wings etc would make things a lot easier. Perhaps even dragging them into the fleet from the icon in the chat window. Thanks.
