This would be a kick-ass feature.

I'm down for it.

Well, it has been asked since..what...2003??

In the simplest form that has been suggested, is that all the skins would have Hue/Saturation/Luminosity data.
3 data sets, with which you could get crapload of variables, with very little stress on the bandwidth.
It could be pushed further if the skins would be split in, say 3 different areas that you could control separately.
Say : armour, midship, structure.

With those 3 different variables you could pick your poison and the data would be about few bytes.
Not server breaking, I would presume?

Now the corp logo, external graphs, that would be much more challenging. Not in the more desolate systems
but in the crowded spots. One can start to calculate the amount of data that would have to be
seeded if there would be 4000 players in a system, and one 100kb logo would have to be sent to one player.
Let alone 4000...

Corp logos are composed, not baked, there would be not 100 kb logo, not the image itself, but few bytes for displaying it in the location on the ship and colors, graphic element like shown in your character info, same with colors, and other graphic items that every client would have inside the files, not bake on server and send image but compose, store vectors on server and send few bytes onto the client, draw on the client side.

If any, i suppose devs response would be something like: yadda yadda no time, yadda yadda not in development now, yadda yadda can't decide how it could look, yadda yadda no penises in space allowed for sure.

As there is new EA guy Sean Decker in the charge of some politics inside CCP, the guy who said "I see the world as a micro-transaction", lube up for microtransaction surprise.

The day I see Hello Kitty paint jobs on ships is the day I trash everything, biomass all characters, and cancel all (currently 6) accounts. Period.

Also, I support some form of ship color thing. Maybe something from like homeworld.. pick specific color sets for specific locations on the ships..

At least let us put corp logos !

If priced right, that would be an intelligent use of the horribly implemented cash shop.

I would pay a dollar to put a corp logo on my ship. Not every ship mind you, but some.

I plan on living forever.......so far, so good.

I support this fully.

To reduce lag and texture downloading etc, it would be a simple tiny over the current texture. This would be optimal. I love it.

Ig all things, I wish that the little corp signal would change on the shop depending on what corp you were in... That alone would put awesome sauce all over my hull.

You lost me at "gay colours". Learn to exist in 2013 then come back and post your idea :P.

This is exactly why it hasn't been introduced YET. CCP soundwave mentioned that he wanted players to have more customization at their disposal. However, his concern was TTP (Time To Pen15) or the time until a user creates a phallus based image.

"Now, whenever we talk about customization, we inevitably end up with the issue of TTP (time to pen15; the measurement of how long it takes your users to place the first pen15 on something). We’d need to find some way of moderating the creations before they hit the general public, while at the same time keeping a relatively easy to use and fluid creation/distribution process. But yeah, having the stuff be made and traded by players would be amazing." -CCP Soundwave

I still don't know why they just don't have a set of pre-customized skins for each ship, with a changable pre-set color palette (maybe a million colors or whatever), and so long as CCP is approving and validating Corporate and Alliance logo, there should be just zero TTP and plenty of options. It shouldn't be a real problem to control that at all.

Honestly, I think the biggest problem is just the visual effects of the game don't really lend themselves to skin changes, color palettes, and logos. I mean, unless you "Look at" a ship, or are right next to it you aren't going really "see" anything at all outside the sillouette of the ship. That I think is the real problem.

I'm against the idea of having customisation for all to see, but being able to replace my own texture files would be nice.

Glamouflage all the way.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.

problem with custom paint is some people might make their ship look werid and ruins the immersion for others. i think this is the main reason

The issue is if every corp was able to show their logo or have a unique paint job it would take alot more resources to load up the extra data. Causing lag and slow load ins for ships coming into system. Maybe if corps could pay for a paint scheme for corp members only but still same problem remains. Its matter of the stress to our one server.

do you understand how computers work? No, it'd wouldn't take "alot more resources". It'd load the picture ONCE, and put it on every spot on every ship designated for the "corp logo" That's it. In fact, your game already does that, with the faction logo on the ships.

Well honestly it does take more resources. That's why several online games offer the ability to turn on or off custom skins for other players and show only the defaults. Because the ship defaults are local on your system, every single players custom skin is not. And it would have to be pretty high detail skin or it would look awful. so it's disingenuous to say that's not how computers work, or it would have no effect.

Now you're probably onto something that it wouldn't be an issue for lots of systems these days, i'd imagine they could handle it.

But from what I hear CCP has really specific net code for what resources and calculations are local in order to handle everything as smooth as possible, if it was no biggie they wouldn't need to do that.

That said, I would love this feature.

Skins, no. Alliance logos sure. There loaded into the client periodically. Easy enough to add the skins to the ship.

I am opposed to player-generated content. As people said, it would quickly degrade into lewdness and obscenity. If CCP wanted to add alternate skins for stuff, fine, though I would honestly prefer those development hours to be spent elsewhere.
