tatical overlay?

Is there any point for using the tatical overlay for solo fights? While I can see the use of it for fleet battles and command and control but for the most part I doesn't seem to be worth it, you have to zoom out so far that you can't see anything.

And anyway frigate fights are over in seconds so its not going to change anything.

The tactical overlay is an incredibly useful tool. Ranges are listed both numerically and visually in the 'ghost spheres' that appear when you mouse over a module. When you're trying to apply damage while moving at high speed you can see your kill zone as you pilot your ship through space. For frigate 1v1's you can tell exactly what distance you need to be to scram or web your enemy, what range you need to be at without giving up extra distance so your opponent can do the same.

Its especially useful in one vs many combat when you need to rapidly pick targets and avoid being scrammed at the same time.

You can also use the numbers as reference points for burning tactical bookmarks that are evenly distributed around a central target.

Just make sure it is T2 first.

Stealth bombers have a rather unique display showing the projected AoE of the bomb for example. In a 1vs1 it's not that usefull (when does that ever happen anyway so who cares) but when dealing with multiple opponents while you yourself are flying something bigger then a T1 frigate, it's a damn handy visual tool. But yeah for a frigate fight it gets more or less in the way so I just turn it off.

9 out of 10 times I use it - even for frig fights.

It shows you the optimal and falloff for your weapons, the position of the enemy in relation to your own in a much more accurate fashion (as long as you have him selected).

Personally, the times I don't use it is in gang fights, mini clusterf-ks where I feel it impairs my view more rather than help it.

- I think my passion is misinterpreted as anger sometimes. And I don't think people are ready for the message that I'm delivering, and delivering with a sense of violent love.

I also use it when scouting. The overlay makes it easier to gauge the distance between the target and some object (like a gate or wormhole) other then my own ship.
