PEGI and EVE

From what I understand, the ESRB as rated EVE T for teen, and the PEGI rating is 12.

I quite frankly don't know how it works, but does this influence the development of the game? Say for example that the developers have an interesting idea, but because it would have too much violence or for whatever reason, they decide not to implement it for the simple matter of maintaining the rating.

Should EVE ever be rated has a M for Mature? Do you think EVE is in a good state or should it evolve into something...more manly? P

Overall I would like to hear thoughts, as it is something I'm not really familiar with.

Not much potential for M ratings and all that in a game with no blood involved or actual shooting of any human figures. EVE is pretty much a rated G affair.

Now Local Chat.....that is beyond even an NC-17 rating. But that's more a knuckleheaded knuckle-dragging playerbase issue than a game design flaw.

Only way Eve could become an M rated game was if WiS was added and CCP made it extremely violent and or have nudity.

And it would make sense, right? Given that EVE is a harsh universe. But is it that simple to migrate from one rating to the other? What about the implications with the existing user base?

Thanks alot for the replies so far! Smile

Yes it would fit in nicely in the EvE universe and I dont think a "M" rating would hurt their userbase and ammount of new accounts created. I mean look at all the kiddies playing GTA, COD and Battlefield. The rating basically means nothing.

But personally I could careless how violent the game is and if it had nudity or not. I will not push CCP to make it that way either, they can do as they please with this topic.

Reasons to get a M rating:

Massive blood sprays
Brains in any shape or condition
Maimed limbs
Killing more than 5 innocents or 25 bad guys at once
Implying that a dog could possibly had hurt a paw but it is being attended by Vet Barbie and prognosis is good
Showing a nipple for more than 0.25 seconds

Ratings are actually quite the ephemeral thing.

The X designation used to be used for legitimate films like "Midnight Cowboy" and "Last Tango in Paris" until it was slapped onto every pron film by definition. But the Hollywood folks didn't want their films being associated with that arm of the industry, so they just started editing things down to get an R instead.

The solution was the NC-17 rating for 'legitimate' films, but any film that gets slapped with that is immediately unshowable at any theater in about 35 states. So it's hardly ever used.

I remember when PG films actually had a lot of soft core in them. Tons of it. But thanks to Spielberg's hijinks with "I J and the Temple of Doom" the industry was forced to implement the PG-13 rating. Which has basically been slowly killing the industry for adult (not pron adult) films. Rated R films tend to not make the top 10 ever. Adult content is dumbed down to the PG-13 for more financial success as the exclusive reason. And the violence now even in PG films is a lot more than what was PG in the 70s but absolutely no sex is allowed like it once was.

And all that confusion is just a 25 year part of the story.

Tring to implement this kind of system as applicable to video games is one of the more hare-brained ideas ever to come out of the "Oh My God We Must Protect The Children...The Children....What About The Children" organizations.

Just remembered "Saturday Night Fever" was rated R, but was so popular, they cut a PG version that was re-released to theaters that following summer so kids could get in.

Never ever happened again.

Nowadays it would just be initially cut as PG-13. That paradigm has been really damaging to the industry tbh.

And honestly, even R films like "Brokeback Mountain" are not really R films. It has more to with the 'idea' than anything actually shown. There just is not anything at all depicted in it that is not seen on TV shows now (2 guys shirtless in bed talking..........).

Even the characters initial 'encounter'.....they still have their clothes on for sakes. And if anything kids would have no idea what was going on its depicted so obliquely. It's just not titillating at all in the least bit. And you all know my story......

I can't imagine what sex crazed country could possibly fear the nipple. Although I think it may reside on the North American continent.
