Missile scaling and my confusion about torpedos

Im sure someone out there knows the answer to this question so here goes...

light missiles = light dmg, fast and short range.

heavy missiles = modest dmg, modest speed and modest range.

Cruise missiles = moderate dmg, slow speed and really long range.

Torpedos high dmg, slowest so far, and the part that confuses me since it seems to go against the pattern set by the previous levels of missiles, really short range. I mean these things barely leave the torp tube before exploding.

If the previous pattern was followed then torps should have a range of 1000+ km

Yawn,  I'm right as usual. The predictability kinda gets boring really.

You're misunderstanding. Torpedoes are not an upgrade of cruise missiles, they are the short-range version. The complete list would be:

Frigate-sized: Light missiles (long range) / rockets (short range)
Cruiser-sized: Heavy missiles (long range) / heavy assault missiles (short range)
Battleship-sized: Cruise missiles (long range) / torpedoes (short range)
Capital-sized: Citadel cruise missiles (long range) / citadel torpedoes (short range)

The short range versions do more raw damage than the long range versions of the same tier.

The Torpedos belong to the short ranged missiles... Like Rockets and HAMs.

You are comparing unguided missiles (torps) with guided missiles.

Guided:
Light Missiles -> Heavy Missiles -> Cruise Missiles

Unguided:
Rockets -> Heavy Assault Missiles -> Torpedoes

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

actually back then, Torps used to have a higher range than they have today.

I can lash out with Torps at 77km, and my Missile Bombardment skill is only at IV so I can get even further out of them if I skill to V Shocked

Compared to Cruise Missiles, yeah they're short range. But they still have one hell of a range, if I have the most powerful ammo in, rather than the ranged ammo, I hit at 47km which is only just short of my Heavies...
