Using the star map I see a huge number of ship and pod kills going on. zKillboard shows that The Marmite Collective is racking up the kills. Some one in local said they filed wardecs against dozens of corporations so they can attack without repercussions from Concord.

What's going on (I wish Eve provided a way to watch the action in a system.)?

Does this happen often?

How long does it usually last?

If I never joined a corporation can I travel through the system without being attacked? Or are there any tips for getting through?

Do the gankers try to catch ships when they come out of a station, or before they jump through a gate?

You are only safe from being war dec'd in a NPC corp not from being ganked.

Organized gankers can pop anyone, anywhere if you leave them the opportunity.

If someone wants to gank you they will. The idea is to not make yourself a target:

When undocking have insta undock bookmarks for the stations you frequent. (a bookmark that is off grid straight out from the undock)
When docking have bookmarks setup at stations that always land you at 0 (sometimes the dock command will land you outside the docking sphere)
Do not carry enough valuable cargo that it is profitable to gank you.
Do not fit shiney modules to your ship.
Fit a tank.
Do not auto pilot.

When you join a player corp, make sure it's one that can teach you how to operate under a wardec (and listen to that advice). I've seen far too many incidents of people flying expensive PvE ships, freighters, industrials carelessly, etc while under a wardec.

It's possible to avoid the main trade hubs in many cases, you can buy remotely, use courier contracts, etc.

I'll elaborate a bit more so that there is little room for misinterpretation.

People in NPC corporations (that all people start out in)...
- cannot be War Dec'ed (declared war on)
- cannot shoot or be shot at by anyone in high-sec without being WTFBBQPWND by the NPC police.
--- exception; you have challenged someone to a duel.
--- exception; you have taken from someone else's wreck or "jetcan" (even if it is your stuff initially).
--- exception; you shoot an "outlaw" (someone with < -5.0 security status) or someone who has taken loot from your wreck or jetcan.

What this basically means is that as long as you don't go into low security or null security space (0.4 to 0.0 systems) or shoot anyone you can't be legally shot at.
However... if you carry too many expensive items (either as cargo or equipped weapons/modules) then there is a chance that people will still shoot at you despite the repercussions (see: they will lose their ships to the NPC police).

In player corporations...
- you can be War Dec'ed (for a price).
- you can shoot and/or be shot at by other corp members without incurring NPC wrath.
- all other rules still apply with regards to jetcans, wrecks, and outlaws.
- you can set up starbases on moons if the corp has a high enough combined standings towards the local NPC faction.
- management can use the tax they collect off of you to maintain the corp and provide "perks."

So don't worry about the Marmites or high-sec violence in general unless you carry expensive things and/or don't tank your ships and/or **** them off and/or don't understand the aggression rules (which anyone here would be more than happy to explain if you ask).

Wardecs are a way of life for most large null alliances and many of the smaller alliances, so this is really nothing new. If you're still in the NPC corp as long as you fly something less expensive as what it would cost to gank it you're "usually" safe. Not to say people don't gank for tears but usually they do it for profit. Freight Club and in particular Emizeko Chai are notorious for wardeccing and getting 2-3 Jump Freighters a day. So it all comes down to who you join and what you're hauling. If you aren't being silly you usually are safe. But it is EVE at the end of the day.

If Jita is full and you have to wait for clearance, avoid the Perimeter gate and use the Nyabainen (or whatever that system is called) gate, even if not wardecced. I always found that one remarkably empty.
Not for faster entry but to avoid suicide gankers or smartbombers.
As a side bonus, it lands you at Jita 4/4 from a different angle.

If wardecced, it is probably best to avoid Jita altogether, even with the best counter measures, lag can still get you.

Others answered your direct question. I'd just like to say kudos on the above. Keep doing things like that and live long time in Eve. AFK/bury head in cockpit or Youtube, die in a fire.

Highsec wardec by people like The Marmite Collective are simply wardecs on corporations that they think will be easy targets (like indy corps, PvE only corps, basically anyone that looks like they won't/don't know how to fight back). Unfortunately, this is a valid, and usually profitiable, tactic.

The best thing to do is to do as other have suggested. Learn how to fly safely and avoid busy places like trade or missions hubs unless you have a scout or know exactly what you are doing.
