it would give us something useful to watch on TV in captains quarters!

Gas clouds, meteor showers, (comets?)

Randomly appearing anywhere in space.

This would require all pilots in space to keep an eye on their ships, and to remove it from the 'danger zone'

To counter this you can fit a Damage Control, which will reduce the damage taken by 90% but the rest of us will take anything between 1000-99000 damage throughout 1-20 minute period.

Main argument: Space in reality is far from safe, the surrounding climate will get you in trouble 99.9999999999% of the times, not pirates

I do like the basic idea behind it but not loosing my ship to something that random Ugh
actually I would be fine with it if they would only do like 10-50 maybe 100dps and would not appear in a radius of say 20-40 km from the gate so you can't loose your ship due to randomly warping into such a gas cloud which would be very frustrating
but it would imo be awesome to have also gas clouds that would jam sensors , warp disrupt , drain energy or maybe even pull you out of warp like warp bubbles

I think it would be a lot of fun to be able to use those clouds to your advantage in pvp

I kinda like this.

It shouldn't just be damage. Maybe sometimes it reduces speed based on mass with smaller ships taking a bigger hit than bigger ships.

Or your overview range is reduced.

Something like this would appear inside of plexes and sites.

I kinda like this, but I won't support it because of the details in the OP I don't agree with. I like post #2 better.

I've always wanted space weather, but there need to be ways of figuring out what'sw going on. The corp or alliance which owns a system should be able to deploy weather satellites that can give them advanced warning of any impending weather front, so that if they know their host star is going to throw out a major EM flare in six hours they can adjust accordingly - either by flying high EM resist ships, or by switching to an armor tank or whatever.

But yeah, solar flares, meteor storms, gamma ray bursts, strange gravitational anomalies, nebulae etc... would all serve to make space more distinct.

Basic types (already mentioned) could be meteor swarms which deal Kin and Exp damage, blowouts from stars which could deam EM and Therm damage, and localised nebula/gas clouds/whatever that impact the operation of directional scanners, scan res, and locking range.

The damage should not (I think) ever be enough to destroy even a shuttle (space ships are built to operate in space after all) but should be enough to make long-term residents consider switching to a race that tanks the local condition best, to give them a home advantage over any foreign invaders who may not be so well prepared.

EVE is dead

i suggested something like this a few years ago, and i would still love to see something like that happen in game. it would indeed add alot more tactical value of where fights are happening and what folks bring.

"Space weather", as in 'changing conditions in a solar system'... That idea has merit. It was a good start with W-space, that cosmic phenomena have some influence on the ship's system performance, but it lost the novelty rather quickly. One look at the W-space system ID and you know exactly what you can expect and how you can counter or benefit from it.

But changing space weather conditions? Solar flares battering the shields? Sunspot activity and their magnetic influence interfering with the ship's systems? Dense gas clouds blinding the sensors? Asteroids making warp transit and near-space maneuvering a challenge? Things like these can easily turn around the outcome of a battle if someone steps in unprepared. And it gives the loser even one more thing to put the blame on... Smile

you have a point, but making eve even more visually appealing is always a good thing. I'm all for prioritizing the visual aspect of the game, much better than wasting time on making the dramiel slightly slower or making the logi ship warp faster, sometimes one gets frustrated when things that doesnt directly effect your gameplay gets prioritized.X

I'm not sure how space weather could be implemented in a way that can be reconciled with the lore. Keep in mind that light needs 8 minutes to travel one astronomical unit. So, weather would have to be a local phenomenon for each specific grid, or would have to be some sort of explicitly superluminal phenomenon.

This is a pretty sweet idea. I like the idea of damage, as well as sensor disruption, etc. Or even something as simple as pushing ships in a specific direction, like a huge bump. Would be funny to see a lot of Hulks get slapped by a gust of space-wind and go tumbling out of a belt.

Can't wait to dual box my Dust toon and EVE toon on the same machine!

Somebody once suggested that certain nebulas should effect the ships in its radius... ccp responded to that with something like "this is an interesting idea"
