I am confused about how this system works. Before I joined my corporation my standing with the "Federal Defense Academy" was positive and it is now in the negative. What causes this and how can I fix it?

Keep in mind that even though your corp's standings might be negative it has no effect on your personal standings.

So if you personally have high standings whipe the corp's standings suck you can still access their agents.

Most NPC standing related stuff look at personal standings first and then at corp level.

Like said missions is one of them. Same for targets, even if your corp's NPC faction standing is below -5 you can enter their space if your personal standings allow it (keep in mind that FW mechanics override this).

Standings are broken down in different levels.

Your alliance (if in an alliance) vs other entity (NPC corp/faction or Players/corps/alliances)
Your corporation vs other entity
You personally vs other entity.


The standing show is always the first from that list.

So if say in your case:

Your corp has a standing of -2.1 to the NPC corp.
You have a standing of 3.4 to the same NPC corp.

This will mean that the derived standing will show -2.1
But the 3.4 is taken into account regarding refining/agent access etc.

Right click the corp in question > show info > standing tab.
this will show all relevant standings + derived standing.
