Hi All,
I've just started level 3 security missions after doing a lot of mining (so few PvE skills).

I bought a Moa and tried the quest - it was NOT up to scratch. I bought a Ferox and it did better but I still couldn't take out all the ships. At this point I know it's me and not the ship.

Can any of you recommend a beginners fit for a Ferox that will let me do level 3 sec missions with some degree of efficiency?

Thanks!

We could do with more infos :
It sounds like you are not applying enough damages, but to which category of npcs ? the bigger ships or the smaller ones ?
Also The Ferox is a snipper, it's bonuses are for range, not for damages.
So you must find more damages elsewhere. Where ? In your gunnery skills.
Before to give you some fits, we should analyze more precisely where is your problem.
The goal is not that you fly what we will advice, but to understand why.
Maybe give us the fit you are using for now ?

Thanks for the replies.

I was up against Amarr Navy - IIRC that means Kinetic and Thermal damage and thus I used Antimatter M charges. The ships were large looking (apologies for the horribly vague details). The quest was called Probing Questions if that helps.

And yes the Ferox gives some range bonuses but at least it does give for them (unlike the other BC which is for Missiles where I have even fewer skills).

Thanks for the fit which is likely to work @ skill level 3. I have some - like gunnery - at 4 but probably 3 is more realistic. I did have cap problems fitting the ship.

What corporation are you running missions for? I don't think a Caldari corp should send you against Amarr.

Slightly less crap version of the fit taking into account you might not be fighting Guristas:

Open this link before every missions you accept Blink

I was asking for the size of the ships because it could have been a problem of tracking : if you let small frigates coming close and orbiting you, your medium railguns will maybe have hard time to follow them. But if you say that you had problems with the big ones, then it's more a problem of breaking their tank.

Well, EM damage would be better against Amarr, antimatter is soso.
According to eve-survival, that mission: http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=ProbingQuestion3am has some Elite cruisers.
So I guess your problem was one of these: http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/item.php?type_id=24975

Those have high resists and high repair. With antimatter you need 105 dps just to cancel his armor repair. Add a bit of damage lost to tracking and/or range and they become a hard nut to crack. Plus, there are NPCs with neuts in that mission, which could create additional problems.

Thank you all and you've all been right.

I tried the fitting suggestions and am doing marginally better - at least I can now have all 7 guns online plus have a few extras running too.

Its true too that the problem was those larger ships with remarkable regen. I had something like 136dps + 40ish dps from drones but the way the fight was going it was taking 1000 rounds to get them down. I'd do 100 damage, they'd regen 99, rinse and repeat.

I've now done a dozen sec level 3 missions with no trouble (I lost one drone when not paying attention) so thanks a lot. I also declined Probing Questions again because it was just nasty plus I didn't really want to go to war with Amarr.

Also remember that you don't always have to kill everything on the field to complete the mission. Sometimes killing the chosen target is enough. In at least one case you don't need to shoot anything, just run trough the site. And often these optional NPCs will be tougher than those you actually have to kill. Read the mission description before you embark.

In fact there are quite a few missions where it's nigh on impossible to just kill everything.
