What if different weapons had there own distinct visual damage on ships.

I was running some incursions this week warping from site to site, shooting Sansha and enjoying the chatter on teamspeak, when my mind began to drift, our fleet was composed of different ships with different weapons. Artillery ships firing off salvos of explosive shells, Hybrid weapons firing magnetically contained super heated plasma and Laser boats with their burning beams of light.

In the past I have posted about Eve's different weapon type systems and how they work and a dev was kind enough to have responded.

I am not sure if CCP's servers would even support this but at the moment different weapons have their own signature damage type, what if this was taken a step further and different weapons had their own graphical damage effect on the hulls of the ships.

for instance hybrid weapons are split in long range rail guns and short range blasters the long range guns fire the shell as it towards the target hitting it with kinetic damage after which the shell cracks open and the contained plasma within is released further adding thermal damage.

Blasters on the other hand process the plasma and contain it within an extremely powerful magnetic field and it is that magnetic field which does the huge kinetic damage and the contained plasma does the heat damage. Visually when a ship is physically hit by a hybrid charge it would have the visual effect of armour being boiled off the vessel or being turned into a gloopy liquid like super heated metal.

Explosive shells for instance would smash into the ship and if the ship is in armour they would be tear away bits of the ship into space to show that damage has been done etc.

Lasers would show burn marks on ship when you zoom in on them, and other ammo like Depleted uranium would also have a similar effect as it is incendiary.

I just feel it would give the weapon types even more character so to speak, or perhaps its currently best to let all this lay in the imaginations of the players.

*I make this statement as someone woefully ignorant of how EvE is actually programmed*

I don't see why such a feature couldn't be handled client side. Heck, I'd be happy if I could only see this kind of effect on myself and my target.

It's also kind of annoyed me that when a ship goes into deep hull, it catches fire in one spot. The same spot. Every time. If I barely escape with my life, I want my ship to actually LOOK like it's barely holding together Big smile

+1 if this can be done without using server side resources.

Yeah I can imagine a pvp scenario where someone just barely escapes in say 30% hull its probably where the flames start to show but to have a ship battered and bruise would really bring forward the sense of a lucky escape. A ship with scares that tells its only story.

It would really add great depth to what is already an immensely rich game.

I don't have a source for it, but I believe that CPP has already touched on this during the last FanFest, as in the visual effects that occur at different stages of combat. (different effects for hitting shield, armour and structure)

But sadly, the art department seem unwilling to grant much, if at all, of the requests from the community.
There are still space-clouds that lag half of the player base to a noticeable frame-rate, I'd rather see some optimization before any more assets are added to the game.

Very nice!

To the OP: I like the idea. I have wanted this for quite a while. In fact, I want it one step further and see the damage exactly where it happened. But that may be asking a bit too much.
