What are the pros and cons between the two? Are security (lv4) missions better than Mining (lv4) ?

Never done the higher level minig missions but its my understanding that they are pretty bad, at least compared to security missions which gives both good rewards and of course in many cases bounties and loot.

Mining missions: easy to do. Minimal attention required, just about 0 risk. Warp in, mine rocks/ice/gas, warp out. They take 2 trips with a retriever/mack for the ice/ore ones, one trip with a Venture for gas. Similar ISK reward to L4 security, about 1/10 the LP, no bounties or loot.

Level 4 mining missions require some minor combat, but drones should be enough for this.
Here you can read about mission details (how much you need to mine, what opponents etc):

In general I would say mining missions are at the bottom of mission types. I tried all types on my different chars, and my choice goes for security.
Security missions are the best for cash. They provide you ISK, LP and salvage/loot, so a lot ov value. They also have the highest skill requirements and initial investment (battleships cost a lot for new player and need quite a lot of skills to fly reasonably well). They are also least boring of mission types (relatively).
Distribution missions are second in my order of. They have minimal requirements - basic industrial is enough for all of them and you only need minimal skills to fly and fit them. They also have no combat in them (except for few lvl1, that you can still complete in industrial with a single gun). Rewards are pretty mediocre, but you can take multiple missions at the same time, so the number of them makes this up somewhat. They are the fastest way to get storyline missions for the purpose of grinding faction standings. This type of missions is extremely boring - all lvl2+ missions consist of flying from point A to B with some cargo, and you do it a lot to get a decent payout.
Mining missions are IMO the worst kind. For higher levels you need mining barge or exhumer, and those take lots of skills. They take quite a lot of time and you get nothing from them but the reward (which is nothing special anyway). As mentioned earlier lvl4 even require some fighting. IMO if you have the skills for barges, you will be better off just mining scordite in some hisec system.

I had an alt with maxed out mining skills so I ran him in mining missions while I trained combat skills, about the time he could fly bs with good skills, I unlocked a minmatar mining corp lvl 4 security agent. I find missions as a whole rather boring but if your looking to make the switch from mining to missions its not a bad way to do it. Otherwise I would avoid them, low pay out, low lp, low standings increase.
