Alt Character Question

Here is a silly/noob question, but I just never had anyone explain it to me yet and I have never read anything on it yet.

When you log in for the first time you create a character and activate it and then use it.

Then when you exit and enter the game again, you have a choice of using the "Main Character" or choosing 2 blank boxes that are also for characters?

I have never tried to create a new character before. If I do create a new character, does this affect the other one somehow?

Is this how people have mining characters and also pvp characters?

If I had 2 characters, do I (or can I) use one to mine ore and then refine it and sell it and then give the money to the other character?

How does this work?

I dont really like having to play 1 character and then say, yeah, I spent a lot of time on this one but I think I will log out and back into yet another character and go mining for a while and then log off again.

You can only train 1 character at a time per account

To answer your questions:

Sometimes.

Some people run two separate accounts, so they can train on both. Some buy a mining pc and transfer it onto their account. Some split the training time between them.

A lot of people have a posting Alt [:-d], so they don't expose their main.
A fair number of people have a Jita price check alt, that they park in jita, and bounce over to when they want to see if it's worth the trip.

And yes, you can transfer isk between alts.

I run two account. This character is my PvP char and currently is in NPC null sec. My second account has a mission runner carebear in the first slot with some industrial and trading skills, he lives in high sec.

Both accounts have a second character on them, each have a minion character with some basic skills. Thus I log Major Trant on in null sec and dual box to use the minion character from my other account to scout, haul, cyno and other tasks with. Then I log on to my mission character and use the minion character from Major Trant's account to haul, salvage etc.

For example I jumped Major Trant into a system yesterday and discovered 10 Fighters on scan. I went and picked up a Cheetah and scanned them down. They were sitting outside a red POS (Player Owned Station), but no reds were in system. I brought minion along in a hauler and while Trant speed tanked the POS guns, minion warped in and hauled off the fighters, it took 3 trips cause they each take 5000 m3 of cargo space, but 15 minutes later I was around 180M isk richer.

Later that day I found a True Sansha Cruiser in a belt. Trant using a slow Drake, took him and his bodyguards down at 60Km range, trouble is you have to pop the important guy first cause they sometimes warp off, but the moment he pops, like a big red flag, "True Sansha Medium Commander Wreak" appears on everyone's onboard scanner. Minion to the rescue, flying a Slasher he warps in and nicks the loot before anyone else arrived to chase me off (or give me a hand). Another 90M Isk bagged. I had a good day yesterday.

In order to dual box you need two accounts. You also need two accounts if your motivation is the second skill queue and the desire to specialize into different areas. But minion characters with low skill points are really useful additions. All my minions have less than 900K SP and no implants, which means that I never have to upgrade their clones and I can just abandon them, to save my main characters when things go wrong. But that is enough for them to fly every T1 Frigate and T1 Destroyer, a Noctis (L3), a hauler (obviously a Bestower), use a Prototype Cloaking device, Salvager (L4) and lite a cyno.

I wouldn't advise trying to dual box with two main characters. I lost a CNR that way once.

1) Yes clicking on the blank boxes will let you create a new character.

2) The only effect creating a new character has on the old one - is that if you want to train skills on the new character - you have to stop training them on the first one to do it. Otherwise - no effect. Be aware though that if you give enough of your API away - people can see all your alternate characters. Many Corporations require you to do that or they won't let you in. The API methodology has changed recently so I can't give you a better answer than that just now.

3) For characters on the same account - you can use each of your characters to do anything you want - you just can't use them both at the same time. If you try to log in a second time to the same account - it will log out the first log in. Most of us who use a lot of characters have done that now and again ... "Oh! I'll just log in Charcter #12. They have the skill I need ... oops ..."

4) As mentioned above - if you want to have more than one character active at the same time - you have to have a second account. If you do have a second account - one character on that account can train skills at a time, just like with the first account. There is no built in connection between these accounts - unless you create one - by putting them in the same corporation or trading with each other (which some levels of API may be able to detect).

5) You can transfer money from any character in the game to any other character in the game. Just go to your People and Places - look the character up - and give them money. Equipment and ships is a little trickier. If they are in the same corporation they can have a Corporate Office where they share hangars and each character with the hangar access privilege can access whatever is in it. You can create a contract from one character to the next. You can also dump things out in space then have the other character log in and go get them - but then anyone else can get them too.

6) For the most part - you don't want to split your training time between characters until you've got the first one fairly well along. You can create another character if you want - just don't train them to do anything. Price check characters are common uses for untrained alts - as are posting alts.

7) One thing to look out for with the creation of alts characters and accounts - is that each one you create tends to absorb some of your time. That is to say that there is a certain amount of overhead associated with each one you create - if you are going to make use of them. So ... mostly ... don't create another character or account just for the hell of it - have a reason in mind.

8) Deleting characters. You can delete characters any time you want. There's a cool down time to give you a chance to change your mind - and if you change your mind after deleting it - you can try an appeal to the GM's and maybe they'll restore the guy for you. But - don't delete characters to avoid any bad reputation they've accumulated - this can get you in trouble with the GM's. An example would be - creating a character - going out and ganking a bunch of other players - and then deleting that character once they can no longer go into Hi Sec because of their bad security standing - so you can create yet another character to do the same thing with. If they find out you've done that - you will get in trouble. But - if you screw up in character creation (say you were drunk) and later on sober up and think "My God! What did I do?" then you can just delete them with no problems. I've deleted two characters because I made an unfortunate name choice and another I created simply to do something in an area I had no characters in.
