Turrets: For what? You shouldn't be sticking around in combat in a freighter.
Rigs: Because then freighter would have a fittable tank, and you wouldn't be able to cheaply and effortlessly gank freighters, and gankers would cry.

Potential Issues in giving fitting slots to Freighters:

Highslots: Who cares if a freighter has a turret... that's not game changing nor important. On the other hand, if a freighter could fit a cloak it would gain an enormous amount of extra "safety" for traveling through hostile territory. Frankly, this would be unacceptable, as moving freighters is suppose to be risky.

Medium Slots: Who cares if a freighter had an ECM burst, or a point.... no big deal. On the other hand, if a freighter can fit a MWD, it could reduce it's 40+ second align time to 10-20 seconds by simply pulsing their MWD. A huge portion of freighter travel time is aligning between systems, and I don't think reducing this is a good thing!

Low Slots: If a freighter can fit cargo expanders to exceed 1m m3, they can bring packaged dreads and carriers into highsec. This should be avoided!!! If a freighter fits a DCU, they can essentially double their HP without any sacrifice. This would also be unacceptable.

In truth, giving freighters some fitting options is fine. The should get 1 and a half of the following desireable attributes:
a.) Cargo space. If they aren't fit for cargo, they should have a capacity around 50-100k m3. If they are fit for cargo, let them be near 1m m3.
b.) Tank. If they aren't fit for tank, they should have an EHP around 90k. If they are tanked, let them be 500k EHP.
c.) Agility. If they aren't fit for agility, they should have align times of 75s. If they are fit right, let them align in 20s.

If maxed on any attribute, they suffer in the other two, thereby giving them a choice with pros and cons!

This is already possible with the help of a corpmate and a web. All your corpmate has to do is lock.web your freighter and it almost always instantly aligns and warps, nice little trick.

Yes and because you need a corpmate (or at least a duel) to do this, it at least requires some cooperation (or running an alt). The fact that it's possible with teamwork does not mean that it should be possible solo (with respect to number of characters).

A ton of threads bears make because they are afraid of freighter ganks and want to make them ungankable.
500k ehp shouldn't be possible on any valuable non combat ship.

Use scouts and web freighters, the m3 is good enough as well.
Freighters need no buff, a balanced change would be fine but if they should be allowed to fit dcu they should have a role penalty that reduces its effect to 20-25% of its normal values.
