I apologize If this suggestion has been posted before or is being worked on, but I would like to see indicators for North South East and West on the in-space tactical overlay.

You do realize that such designations are planetary, along with up and down.

That being set aside you could align the grid along some 'galactic centre' or common point to all of new eden such as the Eve Gate. and orient off of that.

It would be better than turn left after you leave the gate (Incursions has those often)

Most in system navigation always seem to be head towards that (target designation) not head east for 50 km.

The way I have seen this done is that the line that is closest to the sun is the N line. If the sun is in the middle of two lines the line that is to the right of the sun is N.

The challenge with doing it this way is that it can take 10 or so seconds to get your orientation to the sun and then determine where north is.. Another way to do this would be to color code the lines. That way you could use the color of the line in place of a direction. For instance please burn 10k red etc..

The only thing that I see to be important is directional consistency in the solar system.. If this was done on a system by system basis It would be fine but the value of being able to communicate with your fleet a particular direction is where the value would be realized.

I'm actually fairly certain that the Tactial Overlay is always oriented the same direction, as are most celestial objects like missions, stations, ect. The lines just aren't labeled with directions. I for one would love to see "Spinward" and "Anti-Spinward" for a start :)

It could be totally arbitrary without losing any of its value.

That being said, I'm against the idea of using North/East/South/West; like was said before those are purely planetary distinctions and wouldn't make much sense in EVE. What would make sense would be a system of 360 degrees, with markings for 0, 90, 180, and 270. That way players could use N/E/S/W on comms, but it wouldn't risk hurting immersion.

If you hit f11 whie in spave it brings up a variety of maps, the bottom one being the solar system. since it shows the camera facing and your position within the system could you not use that?

If this is true, identifying which way was "up" or "0º" on the tactical grid would be a better solution than opening another windows would just clutter my screen space that I'd like for actually viewing my spaceship, or overview/local/fleet/logichan/drones/watchlist. And it would add a bit more to the tactical grid. I'm not asking for the deletion of the alternate option, though.

I might suggest someone check the new little things thread and see if this or something like it has been added, if not add it :)
