that a senetor in the us from one of the southern states(unsure which) wants to get a bill passed that would make being a athiest a treasonable offence, for which the pelenty would be death.

thats all i heard unforutunatly and i was wondering if any of our american friends(preferbly the sane ones) could confirm or deny this rumour, ofc the bill would never pass due to the freedom of religion in your first ammendment but it wouldnt suprise me if someone tryed.

I did a quick search, as I'm at work and don't have a lot of time, and did not find anything remotely like this. So I'm going to have to say, unless someone else can show otherwise, that this is false.

Knowing our lovable Senators like I do, I would not be surprised if it is true that some Senator is or did actually try this. I've heard rumors about silly stuff they try to pass and more sane politicians just point and laugh at them.

But like you said, this would fly in the face of our First Amendment right.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

Considering that the right wing in this country has gone into sociopath mode, I wouldn't say that this is unreasonable. After all, you have assholes who have actually gotten state laws passed that make murder "in defense of a fetus" a pardonable self- defense crime (what was that North (Possibly South) Dakota? You've declared open season on abortion doctors?). And you can never forget the other assholes who tried to pass state laws that were essentially "QUEERS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO TEACH PEOPLE!!!eleventyoneone1!"

Still, treason is a federal crime, thus it would have to be a Congressional Senator, and even THEY have to avoid drinking the crazy juice. If they even mentioned making atheism punishable by death they'd probably be impeached for epic levels of stupid.

It's no more ridiculous than making it illegal to blaspheme. However, unlike some European countries who actually have blasphemy laws, a federal law in the states condemning atheism would not only never pass, it would be laughed out of Congress. Being an atheist while at the same time making fun of religion kinda goes hand in hand as freedom of religion/freedom of speech.

It's a shame more European countries don't see it that way and want to tiptoe around everyone's feelings instead of doing the right thing and making people accountable for their (re)actions.

And with that, I've just figured out the OP's angle; well done, you. In one fell swoop he was able to start a topic that violates both rules of no politics/religious topics at the same time.

Way to go, man. You nearly slipped it by us.

Both sides like to stage legislation that has little chance of passing so to keep their voters riled up and falling for "the differences".

And Zion, the "left" is just as intolerant as the "right". Doesn't matter if it's some kind of right-wing nationalism or a left-wing socialism, it always ends in death camps and war. So while you are finger pointing you best check your six.

Where the hell are you getting your information, because you clearly don't understand the words "intolerant" or "socialism."

Actually he is correct, the USSR, or United Soviet Socialist Republic headed by Stalin and Lenin had the Syberian death-camps for political dissidents. China and North Korea are much the same. The extreme right also has similar issues, consider the Fascist Nationalist Franco of Spain.

As to political posturing through proposing legislation which would never pass in a million years, it happens quite frequently, most of the time saner heads prevail. Unfortunately when there are no sane heads in the room some of this stuff passes. As my math teacher used to say garbage in garbage out.

Too bad treason has several restrictions placed upon it in the United States Constitution (Article 3, Section 3). Such restrictions essentially means that you can only be convicted if:
1) You owe allegiance to the United States
2) There are two witnesses against you
3) You wage war against the United States, or "adhering to their Enemies, in giving Aid or Comfort"

Being atheist is none of these.

Also the penalty of treason is not necessarily death, it is punishable by no less than 5 years imprisonment and fined no less than $10,000 *or* shall receive death.

Basically, it would be UNIMAGINABLE if a senator even ATTEMPTED this. It would be political suicide.

If we were talking about the international political spectrum, then sure. If we were talking about what constitutes the right wing and left wing in America, then no. Sure, there are some dissidents in the far left in America, but the country overwhelmingly leans so much to the right-wing, that "center-right" equates to homophobic, evangelist, Randian Christians.
I mean, there are people saying that Mitt Romney isn't right wing enough for the right wing. Hell, his holiness St. Reagan would be called an evil pinko commie fascist leftist by current right-wingers in this country.

As far as I know, however, we were talking about current day American politics.
