i am a fairly new character, played eve for a little while, left then came back. i have found a nice little 0.3 section of space that has lvl 1 and 2 security missions that are available to me. i have made myself 5 safe spots at various locations, and there are 4 stations in the system, i have yet to make my insta-dock locations.

is there anything else i can do to increase my safety while out and about in this area, i am not yet able to fly a cloaked ship. i have only been in this area for a short while so have not yet kept track of the local activity.

thanks

Hello,

Do you know about the directional scanner (dscan)? If you are doing missions in lowsec, you will want to keep your direction scanner open, set to max range at 360 degrees. Make sure you add scanner probes to your overview. When someone hunts you in a mission, they will require the use of combat scanner probes. These should show up on your directional scanner. When other people are in-system ensure you hit the scan button regularly (like, every twenty seconds or so). When you find combat scanner probes on the d-scan, get the hell outta town - it's likely they are scanning you down.

Apart from that, I think you have set yourself up pretty well with the bookmarks. Insta undocks will prove extremly useful. You might also want to consider making a bookmark on the station (don't bookmark the station directly). This will ensure you always land within docking distance of the station.

I also tend to create bookmarks for ~200km from gates and stations. This allows me to check the gate or station for activity before warping directly on top of them.

Hope that helps!

thanks for the reply, yes i am aware of dscan and tend to use it alot at the moment, i will have to check my overview to make sure i have combats selected aswell.
i forgot about gate bookmarks, will do them when the area is next clear. i have my tracking camera turned on and have also been practising at scanning someone down by dscan alone by narrowing the angle of scan however i have not yet mastered how to do this effectivly.

a) gate perches or pings, as said above make them at warpable range to a gate so that you can visually check the gate before warping to it. They are probably going to be on-grid but could be slightly off grid if you want to be a bit cagey and use the d-scan on short range to check the gate

b) station insta-undock, as said, better to be off-grid and you may need to try a couple of times to get a good one

c) station zero. You know when you warp + dock at the station or warp to zero it sometimes lands you slightly off? Try undocking, Ctrl + space to stop your ship, bookmark that spot, try and warp to it a couple of time to verify that it lands you at 0 on the station. May need to play around a bit, try making one underneath or above or behind the station if the undock doesn't work

d) station perch. Really this is for null sec, where you warp to say 200 off the station to check for bubbles if there is a hostile gang in system, before warping to your zero undock

I don't tend to rely on tracking camera for d-scan - it's a bit slow. But it'll certainly get you used to d-scanning.

Remember, the d-scan only has a max range of around 14AU. If you are trying to see if someone is at a celestial, you might as well not even scan celestials over 14 AU away :)

cheers, what range would you suggest a gate perch to be made at and at what location ie above / behind or does it not matter ?
would i be correct in assuming if i warp to a gate then i will automatically warp to the front of the gate ?

I try to set up my perch / ping bookmarks in the opposite direction of any celestial objects. This will prevent cloaky ships from warping to the gate at 100km, setting up a bookmark, warping away, and then landing 100km from the bookmark - 200km from the gate / station. OR for a cloaky to warp to the gate at 100km, and their buddy warping to the cloaky at 100km, which happens often.

So yeah, try to set it in the opposite direction of any celestials. Failing that, up or down is good enough, since generally celesitals objects are on the horizontal plane, not the vertical. This is not always the case though.

^ what he said, not inline with any celestial, i.e. moon, planet, asteroid belt as it's easy to get the drop on you using temp bookmarks.

OTOH if you have a safe spot bookmark that is somewhere off to the side of a gate (say an on old exploration site) you can use that to warp to the gate at 100, make a temp bookmark, warp back to your safe, warp back to the temp bm at say 70 and you have a ping at 170 off the gate, although mwd'ing frigate is probably quicker.

Check out Dotlan.

There you can track (among others) the kills that were made in your systems, and you can keep track of the names, what they fly, which timezone they operatee in. You can put for example guys who regurarly use smartbombing battleships onto your contact list, so you see when they log on. This way you know which gate to avoid.

In addition to DOTLAN, use staticmapper.

http://evemaps.dotlan.net/
http://evemaps.dotlan.net/

Add both to your in-game browser (it's under accessories).

Staticmapper will also allow you to link to killboards for that system showing exactly which characters killed who in that system, and when they did it. Very useful for figuring out whether there is a pirate gate camp in a system, or whether a guy who likes to kill exploration ships is in the area.

Keep an eye on local. If you see a new player appear, pay special attention to dscan. In particular, look for tackle-type ships and scanner probes.

Visit for a couple of weeks. Get to know the locals. It helps a lot knowing the context of why someone is in the same system. Pay attention to whom of these individuals are prone to go Suspect and / or have a low sec status. Add these people to your contact list, and you can see if they are online or not in People and Places.

Mmmm statimapper does not seem to be upto date with kills, nor the battleclinic killboard when both compared to dotlan.
dotlan is reporting 6 kills for 5th sept 2013 staticmapper reports no kills in last 48hrs and battleclinic killboard link from staticmapper reports last kill as 1st sept 2013.

Cheers Frank never realised i could get so much info from dotlan, however i am not quite sure how to tell what timezone guys are operating in

The kills are timestamped, therefore you can work out when violent pilots fly.
