So maybe stop deluding yourself. If you could scam someone in IRL and get away with it, without that person coming to your home with a chainsaw to murder you, you would. And that's the beauty of EVE. Nobody can take any legal or illegal action against you after the scam has taken place, because there is NO SUCH system in EVE.

No, I wouldn't. When I worked at a company IRL that did all sorts of things to scam its customers, I blew the whistle publicly because stealing from the elderly is utterly against my conscience. Cost me a reasonable job but it was the right thing to do.

Using deception to outdo a rival in a game, however? Not against my conscience at all, whether it be in chess, EVE, or any other game.

i have a friend in Eve who is 60+ yo person in RL.
he is very invested in this game. With his time and (possibly) real money.

Should you scam him in the game you will steal RL time, effort and money he invested into the game.

Still "this is only game"?

I have to completely disagree with you here. You are taking actions way too deep. Most of your people scamming could honestly care less, silly jita scammers passing time and the such. We can jump to the more complex schemes and you are telling us a possibly creative and complex plan to make isk is linked to sadistic mental tendencies involving the suffering of others?

Please let me argue those miners are destroying our beautiful environment and they just want to watch nature burn in real life.

Please save our ecosystem.

If he falls for a blatant scam.. shame.
If he falls for a masterpiece, well someone else put time and hard work into stealing his isk.

Yes, Eve Online, the video game, is and always will be, only a game. WTF else would a video game be?

Should I pity someone because he's 60? Why exactly? Maybe you should stop discriminating against people based on their age. By 60 he should have a bit of wisdom under his belt, doncha think?

In all pay to play MMO's every player is investing time and money. They are still games I'm afraid. I would hope that your 60+ yo friend IRL has accumulated some wisdom over time as to human nature and would be naturally wary of scams. Being that EVE doesn't prohibit this kind of behavior all players should be wary IMO. If it sounds too good to be true, odds are it is. On the topic of exploring the darker side of human nature in a gameplay environment, no I do not think it reflects poorly on the character of the individual involved.
Having played many many many RPG's over the decades I can assure you that playing an evil character and backstabbing your fellow gamers does not make you a bad person. In truth these kinds of exploits can make gameplay rich and exciting for all involved, provided that your fellows ALSO keep in mind that is just a game. Excessive butthurt over being done the dirty by someone you 'trusted' in game is what ruins the game. I've personally arranged the assassination of some of my best friends in RPG's in the past and we still laugh about it to this day. "He wasn't even done twitching before you were pulling his boots off man!" "Yeah, well, they were nice boots!"

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

I can't imagine what age has to do with it. But no other player can steal his time, effort, or money - those things were freely given. All other players can do is provide some game content for him so his investment is not wasted.

Yes, still this is only a game. He invested his time and money willingly into a game where scamming is endorced and even welcomed. Or didnt you tell him ? In that case, you're to blame.

we all invest RL time. EDIT: with exception of botters.

If you're not prepared to take a loss, Eve might not be the place to be.

He has to pay for a chess board, right? He used real money and time to do so. Does that mean you shouldn't beat him at chess or use a cunning strategy to win?

Maybe he should find another hobby like birdwatching or bingo? And the whole "rl" excuse is one I tire of hearing. Your friend isn't the only one who may plex from time to time. I myself purchase plex simply because my real life dictates what my free time in eve looks like.

It is actually more efficient for me to go to work and blow the whole two days wages on plex than it is to rat. Hour per hour I make enough to actually justify it. Does this mean I should use it as an excuse if I lose an expensive ship or am the victim of an elaborate scam?

My time in New Eden has taught me enough to just accept the myriad of possibility instead of using my rl age, orientation, race, religion (or lack thereof) or any other unheeded topic to garner sympathy in a game that has none.

In other words tell your friend welcome to Eve. Shut up, learn and accept the risk like everyone else.

Okay OP, this isn't a very good story (because I'm not a very good scammer) but here goes...

I was sitting in a market hub on my alt, having just set up a margin trading scam for some stupid item. I think it was Current Amplifiers or something like that. After about 2 hours of doing other things on this character, I tabbed back to my alt to see that nobody had yet gobbled up my bloated sell orders.

I was slightly annoyed, as I was new to escrow scamming and wasn't sure what to expect in terms of a timetable. So I figured; the hell with it and shout in local with my alt "GOSH LOOK AT THIS ITEM [linking current amplifiers] SOMEBODY COULD MAKE A REAL KILLING PLAYING THE MARKET."

I had a blinky wallet and was 400mil richer in less than 5 minutes Cool
