This upcoming release is the first of the series to have such.

Oh yes indeed. The very surprise blown in the ad campaign.

edit: Also, it's honestly a day late and a dollar short.

Only reason it finally got the green light after over 20 years was the new trend to absolutely film every work of Young Adult SF possible.

Read Revelation Space by Alaster Reynolds if you want really cool sci fi. I kept picturing Eve in my mind.

The last part is what makes the book unique.

I can go on..........

Ive read the first 2 books of "The First Formic War" which is the prequel to Enders Game. They aren't bad. A little slow at times, but still decent books. I cant wait for the third book so I can see how it goes.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Also, Card is not getting a dime out of me (and yes, he wrote the screenplay so he's up for points) for his rather twisted views on things the past 20 years.

I don't support homophobic Mormons sorry.

Feel free to enjoy it though.

Card has done a "Spider Robinson;" gone completely certifiable bonkers. He used write well, then got preachy... I can live with that. Heinlein did it, and whilst it was annoying, you could kinda filter it out. But where he is now? No thanks. None of my $$, either.

smug bastard that ended up being in the Q continuum ... so what`s wrong with being a smug bastard who knows everything ...Christ knows ..theres enough of them in GD ?

I rather liked Wesley Crusher, actually.
Not exactly one of my fav. characters because it was fairly 1.25 dimensional, but, meh, they had worse that I still liked.
If anything, I disliked Worf, Troi and Crusher-the-mom (just naming main cast for now) noticeably more than Wesley. And don't get me started on Pulaski.

If you're going to have any serious expectations about any movie ever being made, you're going to have a bad time.

Can we have a little leeway on this for the upcoming "Gravity" ?

I'd like to say yes, but probably no.
Funny enough, its IMDB score is nearly 8 from almost 500 voters, and it's still more than a month before release (which seldom happens to any movies AFAIK... per-screening attendees giving actual genuine votes maybe? then there could be some hope, but, meh, not biting yet, probably just the hype machine getting ludicrously over-revved).

I really had liked Card's novel "SongMaster" back around 1980. Upon a recent perusal, it contains a really really disturbing anti-gay subtext.

It was already there.

Early post-Venice Film Fest Comments for "Gravity":

""At once the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space, Gravity is a thrillingly realized survival story spiked with interludes of breath-catching tension and startling surprise."

"........while Bullock is aces in by far the best film she's ever been in."

""As scripted by Cuaron and his son Jonas, this tale of one woman's grim expedition into the unknown is a nerve-shredding suspenser, a daring study in extreme isolation, and one of the most sophisticated and enveloping visions of space travel yet realized onscreen."

"...a howl in the wilderness that sucks the breath from your lungs. It comes blowing in from the ether like some weightless black nightmare, hanging planet Earth at crazy angles behind the action."

".....the director’s long-overdue follow-up to “Children of Men” is at once a nervy experiment in blockbuster minimalism and a film of robust movie-movie thrills, restoring a sense of wonder, terror and possibility to the bigscreen that should inspire awe among critics and audiences worldwide."

"Somewhere, one imagines, the spirits of Stanley Kubrick and Max Ophuls are looking down in admiration."

I don't see the big deal about him being anti-gay marriage. Just about a billion other people are anti-gay marriage too. Just what the author's opinions about certain issues have to do with his book that has nothing to do with said issues is a mystery to me. Now this boycott of the film and such by the pro-gay marriage team is just ridiculous and hypocritical. Let the man believe what he wants to believe. Sure, he's a **** but who cares? Why is it such a big deal?

Also, most overrated sci fi book ever. Yes, the concept is cool but that doesn't take away from the fact that literally the first 3/4 of the book is superfluous diarrhea of the mouth.

I'm not going to give him a dime so he can use it to defend things like California Prop 8 again.

Many others will.

This is why there are still requirements for having one's criticisms taken seriously.

That's your choice to make, but it's just his opinion. It's not like he's running for president and plans to ban gay marriage or anything. Am I missing something? What if the boss of CCP were anti-gay marriage? Would you stop playing Eve? How does his opinion on the subject affect your life? That's what I'm getting at. Is the movie going to be homophobic? I seriously doubt it, as the book doesn't even get close to the subject. I'm pro-gay marriage, but if I wrote a movie that had nothing to do with it, how would it affect people who were anti-gay marriage?

I dunno, the book just seemed a little meh. Of course it's just my opinion, but having heard so many people rant and rave about it, I was rather disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I should've read it in 1984 when I was 6 years old. Ok, the twist (if you want to call it that) was interesting and inventive, but I had already figured it out by the time I got there.

Just as there are requirements for having one's criticisms taken seriously, there are also requirements for having one's praises taken seriously.

Had they simply paid him a bulk fee for his story....fine.

This man is getting profit points for his script. That's a lot of money to use in whatever way he wants.

.........and yes, I'd quit EVE in a heartbeat were that true. But Icelanders would not be that uncool.

Mormons in Utah directly donating literally millions of dollars to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in San Francisco to support Prop 8 led to the whole mess California is just now extracting itself from.

So you would stop enjoying something you enjoy because the creator has a different set of values than you, even when it wouldn't affect your life in any way? Why? Don't you think that's a little hypocritical? That's something right out of the Republican Party playbook.

What's he going to do with the millions he'll make off of it...buy a new house and a new car and invest it, right? You act like he will be able to wield giant anti-gay armies capable of taking Glee off the air and preventing gay marriage in certain states. He's a science fiction writer whose skill is debatable, and he's an arrogant tool. He's not a threat. He's not Chick Fil A, who are owned by a multinational conglomerate and whose toxic attitude towards equality REALLY CAN affect the political landscape with lobbying.

I'm pro-gay marriage, but if a band I like isn't pro-gay marriage, I'm not going to stop listening to them. That's some PMRC mentality right there. That's the road to censorship and, ironically, intolerance.

Furthermore, if you're boycotting him solely over Prop 8, MOVE OUT OF CALIFORNIA. Orson Scott Card isn't keeping you from getting gay married; the state of California would be. Do you really wanna live in California anyway?

Prop 8 affected my ability to get married.

Who said anything about not participating if an entity does not announce being absolutely pro-gay ? I sure did not. You sure did.

Astenion wrote:

And when there is no place left to get married ? ? Whereto then ? And yes, I want to desperately move back to California. And with that statement, you seem to have an ulterior motive of a sort here, on top of the backwards thinking in your arguments.
