So I started in 2006, left around the time of Incarna which would have been 2011. Since I came back I've joined two alliances and here's what I've noticed. (you may or may not care)

- people now openly call their characters 'toons' which is pretty funny considering you would have been laughed off the forums for using such a word when I left. Probably down to the high circulation of eve's population, old guys leaving, new guys coming in from other MMOs

- It has become the norm to RMT, buying Plex so you can pvp because people are too lazy or do not have the time to earn isk other ways, a lot of people just cough up 15 euro/dollar when they die in their tech3 and just get another one with RL cash. Says a lot about the current generation of eve players.

- People now want your full API, and everybody seems happy to give it out so some stranger can read their eve-mails / financial transactions, this seems to be the norm now, and it's even more disturbing that people blindly submit ''I done nothing wrong so have nothing to hide'' attitude of . . . well . . . sheep.

- Prices have risen a lot, a Geddon/Domi was 60mil when I left, a Phobos or Zealot was 120, a carrier was 700, a dread was 1.1 or 1.2 bil. I think CCP have artificially risen prices for the sake of selling PLEX (greed is good)

- Solo pvp was hard to find by the time I left, now it's completely dead in all but FW plexes it seems. Off grid boosters are the norm and tag along for even frigate 'soloers'. Power creep and trends combine to make you spend more money on accounts if you want to compete.

- The current two alliances that I've been in had very shaky understanding of game mechanics, listening to them on teamspeak made me realise that even though I've been gone a few years, I still had a far better understanding of how this game worked than most of these guys who had been playing solidly for 2 or 3 years. I wonder is it similar for others in 'this generation' of eve players.

- Eve's community is now a lot less elitist, which is good. Eve's community thought themselves the 'best' back in the day, but its community really isn't any better than World of Warcraft, or World of Tanks or any other online game in all honesty.

- the new crimewatch system is the epitome of dumbed down, it was really badly done, the killrights system is awful (if you're attacking people in high sec you're either an idiot or a suicide ganker, if you're podding in low sec you're gonna be an outlaw anyway, only getting killrights on these two groups is moronic)

And most shockingly of all . . .

- None of these things really rustle my jimmies like they ought to, I thought an eve where people RMT'd their way into proteus' and flew around in their toons oblivious to game mechanics while handing out their full API to anyone that asked would bother me, but it doesn't. Seems like I can't bring myself to care about the direction eve is going in, I simply chug along hoping to pull a few moments of fun from the hours of boredom

I tried reading this post, but when I clicked on it I got a pop up saying "you need rose colored glasses activated to open this post" so I left. Twisted

I've been here before and after the OP left, not much of what he says is true.

You've seen it happen slowly over time, like how you don't notice someone getting fat if you see them every day.

My three year gap lets me see these things more clearly than you, I think.

Gotta disagree with this one. 3 years ago... that means you left the game right at the height of the bot infestation and drone region farming. The in game economy was horribly screwed up, and as a trader it's really the only point I considered quitting the game for good.

It takes serious balls for a dev to increase prices and build costs (it always spurs months of forum whining and yes, even account cancellations). They didn't even beat around the bush, they straight up went in and increased mineral requirements for T1 ships, and injected some good ol' risk/reward into combat.

(also, realize that T3 BCs are the new "standard" PVP/PVE ship these days, not BSs. This is probably a good thing, because they're more agile and a bit more fun to fly.)

I think by T3 the OP was referring to tech 3 strategic cruisers, not the tier 3 BCs (bruisers).

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

- People have been calling avatars "toons" for quite a while, don't remember anyone being laughed at for it.

- Agreed.

- Agreed, but it's really no big deal.

- I have suspicion on this as well, but the fact of the matter is they have the smartest RTM model around, it is not pay2win and does not really force anyone to participate in it and the game is still more than viable.

- I have NO idea when PVP was hard to find and I have been around since 2003.

- You are either in the wrong alliances, or the game has changed sufficiently to where it is you who does not really understand game mechanics as well as you think you do.

- I wish the game were still as elitist, Too many kids now want stuff for free/easier/handed to them... a clear product of the US education system... but CCP is doing well in this regard and the result is having more people to shoot, so that isn't bad

- New crime-watch is awesome

And most shockingly of all . . .

- Why are you complaining about a fool and their money? If you were REALLY an EVE player - you would welcome these people as targets on the battlefield or in the market place. You should be taking advantage of them, not complaining about the profit potential they allow for.

Maybe YOU are the one who does not get this game.

While I've played in short bursts several times over the last eight years, I haven't gotten deep enough into the game to comment on all OP's points. That said,

1. I tend not to judge people too harshly for the way they type or the wording they use, so whether you say "How are you today?" or "how r u 2day ???" I don't really care. That said, I can never take seriously someone who uses the word "toon" to indicate a character. I guess I associate it too strongly with WoW kids.

2. What were PLEX prices like when you left? If you're going to look at ship prices in terms of PLEX, then that's something to consider. I know PLEX used to have a much smaller nominal value than they have now, but I don't know how much it's changed over the last two years.

3. Learning cliff comic notwithstanding, EVE game mechanics aren't too difficult to understand, but then it's easy for misinformation or misunderstanding to spread and stick in players' minds. Were the misunderstandings you've mentioned very severe, or were they more about minor details with trivial practical effects?

4. It's good this isn't bothering you much. What people say or do in this game just doesn't really matter, and it's a shame when people forget that fact.

This game feeds on noobs. Prices for ships are astronomical, and all it takes is one gank to erase 2 months of work. And now that someone put a bounty on my newbie corp, I'm running around with a 40 mil isk bounty on my head. So it's only a matter of time.

I think this is by design. CCP wants people to PLEX. Not for me. Not sure I'll renew my sub at this point.

So what happened out there?

3 years in the clear and now you are back? It doesn't make sense...

40 million isk bounty? You have nothing to worry about, people aren't going to gank you for the meagre payout they'll get, it won't even cover costs.

I dunno OP, you kinda come across as a bit pretentious to me.

Educate me here, please people.

The new bounty system I gather works so that you get half the mineral value of stuff you blow up in bounty payment, right?
So if this guy was to shell out on platinum insurance and blow himself up on an alt or friend, would he:
• get insurance isk and bounty, exceeding loss and removing bounty
• get insurance isk and bounty, but still lose in the end
• something else
• bounty system works in another way

No, you normally had a dog pile on anyone saying "Toon". You still see it now, but not as much.

Only a 2 month old pilot, so not sure how the bounty mechanics work. Apparently someone who's a newbie/miner griefer put the bounty on our corp and then war decced us. I guess so he can collect on his own bounties?

Agreed, kind of. In my head, I read the post in a bored 80's Valley Girl voice. I wanted to add, "This, like, really blows. So, like, when can we go to the mall?!" at the end.
