Minerals in freefall?

I resubbed after taking a five month break and noticed that minerals have crashed? What is going on? What I've read is that CCP nerfed ice mining, so AFK miners are now mining minerals. And null sec got buffed with extra minerals. Is this right?

Freefall is an exaggeration imo. Yes they've dropped, both due to the fact that it's summer and the fact that they got rebalanced:

I think it's a step in the right though, paying 150 mil for a battleship is outrageous.

Mining barge changes probably also increased the the amount of ore being mined, it also particularly rewards Boters with the new huge ore bays.

Yes CCP added more tritanium & pyerite to the rocks in nullsec which has turned out to be a waste of time for nullsec industry. Without adding more mexallon to the rocks, which CCP will not do as that would make null self-sufficient & independent, the old method of shipping in minerals as railguns is far more efficient. CCP shot themselves in the foot again and stabbed miners in the back.
Ideally CCP would reverse this change to nullsec rocks as it is useless and has disrupted the market. But I don't expect that will happen.

Null Sec Ores were buffed for their High sec Mineral content.

Null Alliances do not need to rely on High Sec for them at all now.

Ice belts in high sec contain only 2500 cubes per spawn. After depleted, 4 hours till next spawn. This drastically reduces the amount available to market especially since 23/7 botting is now destroyed.

Switched to Ice Mining back in April and am making a fortune especially with fuel blocks. I'm never looking back.

This mineral called mexallon would like to have a word with you. I find myself able to farm all the rest of the minerals for capitals/hulls cept the mex, i regularlly ship down 10-30million mex

Minerals have dropped because noone is building battleships any more (except for the old tier 3 ones) because of the Odyssey changes to the number of minerals used to produce them.

Adding to this, a lot of dreads and carriers were built and rigged with the Large T2 rigs before the Capital rigs were introduced. Not sure how much effect this has had, but I guess all the factors mentioned so far add up to create the big changes you have noticed.

I was thinking about buying an Orca. Saw them for 620M Jita buy early last week. Just noticed order completing for 585M.

Are low-end mineral costs that significant for larger hulls? How low do you think tri and pyerite can drop?

You seriously don't think that CCP doesn't cater to every whim that the null sec cartels have?
I read the comments about how mex is still out of whack and how all the null sec babies are whining because they don't have independence from high sec yet.

I am sure that terrible yoke that null sec wears will be removed with the December iteration.
At that same time, CCP is going to give another gift that is far far more lavish than "balancing" mex.

Basically yes which is why the compression and export of low ends from high sec to null was (and still is) significant. However I think the recent buff to null sec mining isn't the only explanation for the drop in mineral prices. A couple of supercap producers in null tell me that even after the buff they still import approximately 75% of their minerals from high sec so I think the concept of true 'independence' is a little over inflated. Still, it's actually nice to see things get cheaper again.

According to my spreadsheet, since mid June, the mineral index as derived from the (pre-rebalance) mineral requirements to build 1 Raven (thanks to Tau Cabalander, who I think was the one who suggested that to me as the basis for an index, wen I asked), has dropped by around 7.5%.

That's sligtly ungood, but the change has been fairly steady, instead of abrupt, and in the grand scheme of things it's a small change.

I thought this has basically been removed with the larger Ore Bays on Barges? Bear

One reason to use ore cans, if solo mining, is if the asteroids are far from the warp-in point, like 40-80 km, as in some security mission sites. And they make sense to use in group mining ops.

Yeah that's true too, hadn't considered that factor. There's also the recent battlecruiser balancing which caused huge stockpiling - in short, there are literally enormous stockpiles of many of the ships that use the largest amounts of minerals to build.

If there's say 250 trillion ISK worth of additional battleship builds that happened pre-Odyssey (which is only about a million hulls, it could even be more), and 150 trillion ISK of capitals, and 100 trillion ISK of battlecruisers left in stockpiles from the previous balance pass, that would explain a major depression in demand now.
