FanFest 2014 pre-planning

So I finally decided that I can take the vacation time and attend FanFest for the first time ever! I was trying to plan ahead and get a room early, but the estimated cost is $2834.10 (USD)! That is just for a regular room with two beds in the Plaza hotel. I feel like that can't be the actual price.

I checked the prices for reserving a room for next week and they are much more reasonable: around $150 (USD). So maybe they don't want people reserving rooms in advance?

On that note, how early should I be looking at reserving the hotel room? In addition, is there a "standard" back-up hotel that people go for if Plaza is full? Are there any other suggestions for a first timer? For example, is it worth it to rent a vehicle? Are any specific places that I just NEED to eat at? I know it's way in advance, but I'm excited so there.

tldr; suggestions for a person's first time to FanFest and average hotel cost.

Oh and are they sticklers on occupancy?

Room is that high at that time as they know they can get that easily.

Reykjavik is actually a really really tiny town.
It's not 'sprawl' like here in America so you will easily be able to walk everywhere relevant.

I've never heard of anyone renting a car except for day trip excursions around the island.

But even then there are tour bus types of things going on.

Personally, I don't think the hotel matters as most are all so close anyway. Save your money, unless you hear of a ridiculous discount at the Plaza.

I was just checking the featured hotel partners. It's always best to stay in a convention hotel, so I was hoping to just stay there. Maybe they don't want people to reserve this soon?

Personally, I'd rather stay at a local bed and breakfast situation.

Depends upon how 'active' one wants to be later in the evening ultimately.

How far can you stumble ?

In terms of hotel costs, I've traditionally paid about $100 a night for a room, booked about two months in advance. However, I wouldn't make a habit of booking that close to the event, last year I'm amazed I got a ticket at all, they sold out of FF tickets extremely quickly. I would grab it ASAP, then book flights and hotel accommodations afterwards, the earlier the better if you have the finances.

May 1-3 should be the official event dates next year at Harpa, but take it from a vet, you'll want to be there at the very least from April 30th through May 5th. Getting in on the Wednesday allows you to deal with jetlag, which is substantial if you're flying in from the US, and giving yourself a day to rest after the Party is definitely advisable.

PS: Regarding hotels, Plaza's quality, I've stayed there before and was happy with it. Arnarhvoll and Thingholt would be two other solid choices, they're all very nice designs from what I've seen. No need to rent a car, everything's within walking distance, and even you rented one, there's virtually no parking for it.

As far as food goes, Nonnabiti (aka, "Nonni's") is a sub shop near Harpa and Centrehotel Plaza that is renowned for its subs. Other places of interest would be The Laundromat Cafe for breakfast, as well as Bæjarins Bestu for a pick-me-up (my god those hot dogs are good).

:3 Thanks so much! I guess they just don't have the booking open yet and that's causing a problem with the estimated cost. I am really excited and want to book everything now. But I guess I can try to be patient.

Ehhh, I'd consider contacting them via email. I saw the same rates last year when I was looking for hotels during FF, so either they're intentionally setting that high price on the few rooms they have left (implying they're essentially sold out), or it's a website bug.

Hopefully it's number two, contact them and see what they have to say. Worst-case scenario, there are other nice hotels and apartments to stay at in the area, or find corpmates / EVE friends that are going and see if they won't let you couch surf.

im also already planning my first trip to fanfest (cause its on my birthday and can imange anything which could be better Pirate)
and searching flights/hotels for end april/start of may 2014

the prizes from the hotel "fanfest offers" seems a bit wired.. esp. when i search f.e. 10-10 days with flight
its suddenly cheaper incl. flight than booking a hotel alone...

not sure if i even get a better offer with a travel agency instead of searching offers online..

Greetings

P.S. i think my flight is cheaper than yours cause i fly from germany
