With Windows 8 completely open to the TPM backdoor making your PC remote controllable without you knowing and no ways to disable it, I am moving to Linux Mint. I assume a lot of other people will do the same given that Linux Mint is even more friendly than M$ Windoze. Is CCP thinking about supporting a Linux client? I know earlier it was supported but dropped. This might be a good time to resume. At the very least EVE should run well on Wine without configuration nightmares. Also CCP could provide instructions on how to run EVE on Wine for the less expert. The amazing thing is that with the same NVIDIA card, EVE runs at 60 FPS on Windoze but 200 FPS on Linux. What does people think about this matter? Let's find some TPM supporters...

Then why not use Windows 7? Support isn't dropping soon, so you can still use that.

What makes you think Linux is better?

This "Linux is more secure" horse has been beaten to a pulp...

There are Malware/Spyware/Viruses for ALL Operating Systems. Leave the poor horse alone now.

(Oh btw I work on Windows and Linux for a living and I use Windows, Linux, Android, iOS and WP at home, so no favoritism... I just use what works for the task at hand. :) )

I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

Amazing anecdote amigo.
There is an option in EVE client that forcefully limits game fps synchronizing with your monitor refresh rate (Interval One/Default aka Vsync). There is no reason for switching this to "Interval immediate", unless you have 120Hz monitor or trying to burn your GPU in bugged cloud.
So you implying that Vsync doesn't work in Linux and you wasting resources? How sad..

Installing crapware AV-software on Linux - that is the stupidest thing ever.

ps: ~8-10 years ago I was just like OP: tried various distros, participated in Ubuntu localization, heh I was even BDSM adept at some point (compiled Gentoo from scratch "to get more speed from my Pentium for free"). Excitement faded since then - I wont use Linux at home, I'm just too old for those "find compatibility patch/ workaround" games.

Linux is not a gaming OS, nor should it be.

Put your Windows box behind a NAT, disable scripts except on trusted webpages, and don't open sketchy executables - I guarantee you won't have virus issues until cyber Armageddon.

Also confirming that AV software and running above 60fps is pointless.

I love(d) Microsoft. With Steve Balmer stepping down - well maybe we'll see some better things in the future. . .Windows 8, X Box 1, Games for Windows Live . . All have issues.

Our enterprise isn't going Windows 8. I'm finding issues with Office. Some of our engineers are needing to use Apache OpenOffice because you can't easily export Excel into semi-colon deliminated formats, etc.

I hope Microsoft start to look after their core business again soon - which is a general purpose operating system - a workbench for their customers to do their stuff on - not a "Lifestyle". MS need to stop trying to be Apple and Steam.

On the Point of Steam. .. . . . If Steam get their Piston games console - or their Linux wrapper working. We won't need CCP to tell us all how to run EVE on Wine - Valve might just be able to do that for us!

Can't wait to see what happens!

(but yeah - Windows 8 isn't what I want on a desktop PC)

google a phrase like how to harden a linux box before your swtich. then google a phase like windows hardening by local policy. Different ways, same goal.

Hate to burst your bubble but if you are not doing the same kind of things to harden your windows install....while the mechanisms and syntax may vary linux side you will still have issues. Blackhats and such don't go omfg its ubuntu 12, run away....They go lets see how hardened this is.

Linux security is granular via config file tweaks and the basics concepts of port management.

Windows has this as well. Windows firewall (if you cba to get a 3rd party one) and and local policy. You can google for local policy security tweaks or even GPO (group policy object) tweaks. They both look and work the same, GPO tools I jsut get added control as my graphic artists users may have differing needs than my accounting section users.

Ever wonder why IT dicks like me at work do "bad" stuff to your work computer?...here is why. A feature not businees essential you may like we read is also liked by hackers as a possible way in. It has to go or you'd better push up the chain valid reasons to keep it. Easy to use and secure don't go in the same sentence.

TL;DR...look up local policy tweaks and play with them. While windows tries like hell to bury lots of controls at the base gui level....damn near everything can be tweaked in local policy.

And how many of your malware/virus programs can be installed without superuser rights?

If Windows is so superior then why there's only 3 systems on this list? http://www.top500.org/
More to the point: why there's 0 (zero, nil, nada) Windows systems in top 10? Shocked

1. Windows 8 is crap. In other news, world is round. More about this shocking discovery at eleven.
2. Mac OS is not Linux based. It is, however, Unix based, which makes Linux and Mac OS distant cousins. It's essentially like chimpanzees and humans - neither evolved from the other, but they do share a common ancestor.
3. The greatest threat to any operating system is a backdoor that nobody can ever close - a stupid user. Use Windows properly and it's unlikely you'll ever be at risk. Use Linux carefree and... well.

Running eve on Wine is easy. If you know as much as you claim to know about Linux and think it's so godly, it should be easy enough for you. We will be waiting for you back on a real operating system when you realize how terrible the graphics drivers for linux distros are and how poorly they run eve. Most of them I used had client crashed left and right, which you can't really have in eve.

Even if they made a linux client, it would be damn hard to keep it stable for all users, and CCP already has too much on their plate. My vote is no. Linux is a tool, not a toy.

Well no matter how and what I am going to drop Windoze due to the spying. Provided you have a port open it will find a way to remote control your crap. I do not hide anything but I hate to lose my freedome. So from now on no more M$ products. On Linux all software is free of charge and if you look at Linux Mint is actually better and more friendly than Windoze. I am still an Apple user, I will have to take a decision on that too. After all these abuses we'll see what people buy: let me see $100 extra for a Windoze mega spy OS or a cool even better OS with 60,000 free software that cost lesser... lt must be a very hard decision to take... M$ is dead, at least for me.

without the security stuff I brought up you will have issues if this paranoid...but hell go for it.

I would advise however you go with a more mainstream flavor. Ie rh/cent os (same stuff, cent os is free) or ubuntu/debian

You see all that free software you are eyeing tends to prepackage for the above pairs. If not the above do not be surprised when you have to build/make off source. And if really new to linux, friendly tip: stock repositories are not updated quickly in many cases. You go to your dream software's site and they are on version 4.7...do not be shocked the OS's repository is version 4.2. Linux repositories updates are as time allows most times or community driven. Less common your software, the less people will care to make a package/updates for it.

The set of permissions is automatically updated online, outside of the control of the user.

[Sarcasm] Nothing to see here right? Microsoft's security have always been 100% secure right? No need to worry about any possible IP spoofing/hijacking and making your computer think updates are coming from Microsoft right?[/Sarcasm]

ever try to install webmin on a linux server? Hint: the repository destination many distro's thinks its at is wrong. YOU have to first put in the right information in the list...then run all your cli stuff to update and pull it down. Skip step 1...only god knows how old what you are pulling is or where the hell its coming from.

And there is 2 parts to windows update. You connect via secured channel in background. Unless ofc you run an internal WSUS server but we'll keep this flat and simple home use. And the verisign screw up from many years ago was not MS' fault....verisign were 100% to blame for giving a random guy off the street M$' cert. This would be why to this day you see the root cert patch every once in a while. It puts the old cert verisign compromised out of commission if found.

Like many of us more objective posters are saying....all OS' have thier issues.

Also your stuff about it getting turned on no user control. This is why I keep saying firewall. If my servers/clients are set to allow port say port 3389 traffiic in the OS FW but an added firewall rule (we'll say hardware, can be software) sets says block 3389.....guess who wins? Hardware Firewall. Setup firewall kill the port(s) you all are whining about and sleep better at night.
