Disclaimer: Beyond these two, I never touched Visual Novels (commonly referred to as "VN"), seeing that this is, mostly, a concept quite unknown to us here in this side of the globe, specially considering that I do watch anime.
and with that out of the picture let's get to the meat.

Analogue: a hate story is, pretty much as the name goes, a story about hate. not delving too much in it, as so not to spoil the story much, it's the record of the final days of the population of a generational ship that was thought to be lost, found drifting lifelessly.

seems mildly interesting but not that special, except if you consider that the society in this enclosed space has retrograded into a sort of neo-confucionist feudal dystopic society before the abrupt ending it suffered.

Hate Plus comes into answering why this society become as such. This second instalment, while stand-alone, has a need of actually playing the first game as to understand it better, making it pretty much a stand-alone expansion pack more than anything else.

As a gamer that enjoys a good narrative together with having good material as to give an afterthought after all it's said and done, I must say that these 2 games are actually quite interesting, showing how a society living in an enclosed space that is a gigantic generational ship, evolves as it moves about the stars. Technicalities aside, considering the relatively simplistic interface of the game, it actually provides enjoyment for a good hours as you shuffle thru the data of an increasingly doomed society. Yes there is romantic tints here and there sometimes bordering immature a bit, but in general it is engaging, specially in a sociological point of view, quite akin to, probably, a cautionary tale on how isolation, power-hungry mongrels, feudalism and misogyny literally fucks up a society and it's morals, and, amazingly on how AI's have a part on this.

basically, a good game, more because of it being a good read, and less of it being a "game" proper, but still, a good game.

both parts are available on steam, and, as I said, while Hate Plus is stand-alone, you need Analogue: a hate story to understand it well.

SPOILER ALERT.

This game is getting headlines in japan due to the fact the 2nd game makes you bake a cake.

I sincerely enjoyed these games, and seriously wish more visual novels would come over the the united states. LIKE Steins;Gate for instance.

Not sure if it is something with my browser, but it seems like your links may be broken.

EDIT: I think it is so as the link in to the above poster's sig works fine.

now that you mentioned it, having issues with it too.. hmm...

edit: oh I got it.

if you use left-click, it will open a blank page. but if you use middle-click (default action to open a link in a new tab in firefox) it will open correctly. I think it's because both websites don't have the "www" part.

I recommend Fate/Stay Night as my favourite VN.

I haven't played Analogue or Hate Plus yet, but I did play Christine Love's earlier work "Don't Take It Personally Babe: It Just Ain't Your Story", which is a) free and b) totally amazing. Takes about an hour and a half to finish. Highly recommended.
