So some people like, it some people don't.

I happen to like it, I think it adds to the atmosphere. Anyways I just made an album that showcases the dark/light effect that it has going for it. You'll see one side is dark, and the other is lit.

(I could only show you my Hyperion because I'm stuck in space until CCP patches the outposts. Roll )

Well CCP might as well add a little toggle box that boosts lighting and keep everyone happy?

Thanks for the screenshots.

Yeah, it seems when there's no light shining on the ships, they are dark.

Wow, who would have thought .... xD

+1 for a slider to adjust brightness.

I like it a lot too, makes EVE feel like that cold harsh universe it's meant to be. Besides, ships look perfectly lit up when the sun is shining on them.

THIS!

The only thing EVE needs is for the sun to be dimmer the further you are from them. Then it would be REALLY dark.

The scene looks cool but it is like that all the time. How silent and ominous can it be when it's just the same hard to see structure, on you and everyone else, everywhere you go.

After a few weeks of playing Eve, all those ships will still be difficult to see properly. To get the sun reflecting off it enough cuts down your viewing angle to less than a third of it; just to see it normally. Not brilliantly. Normally.

Ideally it would be a little too bright when reflecting the sun, a little too dark when not, and comfortable to view everywhere in between. The scenes where ships disappear into the background are dark and cool yes but they should be infrequent, something to take a photo of when (imo) you're:
· fighting behind a planet
· somewhere on the far edge of a system

Not the inescapable norm.

Shots of a pod:

Note that this starts with the 100% best angle. The sun is hitting the pod directly and this is as bright and as zoomed in as it will ever be. It should be brilliant but it's merely visible.

The dark style looks pretty cool, but I'd like a High Slot Strobe light!

The surrounding UI is quite dark as well, which is my only object, the gfx are great.
Always ... Never ... Forget to check your references.   Peace out Zulu! Hope you land well!

Looks good, tho imho the difference could be even stronger..

CCP, if you want to please everyone in this matter, why not just add a slider for ambient lightning. Those people who like to see their ship in it's full glory no matter what angle could slide it to max while people like me could put on the low end and all the rest somewhere in between..
Easy to add to the preferences screen resulting in lots of happy people.

That, and for celestials to cast proper shadows, so stations and ships aren't inexplicably lit when on the dark side of a planet or moon.

Good point. Add shadows from rings on the gas giants, and, thought not lighting related, some frozen poles on planets in general.

CCP why bother even upgrading the ships if we can't freaking see them. Add some sort of slider so the "space is dark" assholes can be happy and I can see my damned ship.

however, considering how stuff is "in real space"(TM) this is actually quite an approximation of how objects are actually perceived in space.

yes I know, "eve is a game" and all that, but space is actually quite the black mass of darkness with spotted lights here and there, and that's how it actually seems now.

To answer in a similar manner. Spin in the station, you can see your ship in it's full glory bathing in the lights of the dock. This is not Hello Kitty Online. (more like Minmatar Online)

By the way I like the realistic shadows, it really adds to the immersion of the game.

I don't suffer from insanity.. I enjoy it !
