This.

I remember watching fanfest videos online, great thoughts about WIS and Planetary flight and whatnot..

Planetary flight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pg1dzAvL2M

That video was released... SEVEN.. YEARS.. AGO.

The list of great features that never happened is loooong and like you said.. the null people with the same amount of life irl are sadly the ones who get their voices heard here on the forums.

Planetary flight was intended as a joke. There never ever were any plans nor ideas about implementing it.

Citation needed.

There are no citations as far as I know. But the fact that it was a single video relased during Fanfest 7 years ago and CCP has not talked about it never again should be a clue. According to EVE pundits, it was a teaser/joke related to Planetary Interaction and never were any plans to actually implement it.

But don't hesitate to contact CCP devs and get a citation.

At FanFest 2004, we announced planetary flight would be in the Kali expansion and even gave a 'proof of concept' demonstration. However, we spoke a little bit too soon. The Devs took a further look into coding planetary flight and everything it entailed. The coding and server resources were deemed too heavy to include in Kali and delayed.

Planetary flight will be added to EVE. However, its inclusion has been determined worthy of its own expansion. While this is subject to change, I would guess that planetary flight will be in the expansion after Kali.

You see? Claiming that there are no citations on, say, adding flying platypus to EVE, is a way more efficent to produce such citations than just ask for them... thank you, I'll save that for future use.Lol

EvE will eventually be beat out. EvE set the standard, and now developers will try and top that standard. That's the way development works: beat out the competition.

I think it would be best for Egosoft, and all of the players of their games, if CCP didn't aquire them. CCP needs to get its own act together before they can think of acquiring other game makers to incorporate their technologies.

However, another reason might be that CCP is using their own game development software/engine or whatever the jargon is, and it may not be compatible with EVE. So, there really would be no way to implement any of what was shown in that trailer.

And now to log on to Crunchyroll to watch Attack on Titan! and Space Brothers!

Watch this space.  New exciting signature in development.

More fanfest vaporware promises that are never kept ... like the tessellation / asteroid bumping physics / shields glowing when hit shown 2 years ago, those will be seen in 2024 or so

No. It was supposed to be in the list to do in 2005. Obviously wasn't done and it's well past its time.

I agree with OP. After the failure of NEX store and microtransactions expansion, CCP are mostly focused on fixing and patching things, with a couple of new features like a new ship. I dont know what happened, do they got so scared cause they lost subscribers back then? not sure, but from that moment expansions are mostly patches, and not real expansions. And the so called exploration expansion we have today just added a new minigame and a new jump effect, and didnt really change much on the exploration game imo.

Played X series long before I played eve, each release gets better and better and leaves you sitting in your underwear for 2 months at a time making space factories and going fully autist while living off toast and cereal. Rebirth might drag me away from eve again for 6 to 12 months I suspect!

to think we spent months debating last year, whether the player base is willing to make a sacrifice and go for a year, or more, with no content updates in exchange of having all the dev time devoted to a deep, and complete POS/outpost overhaul. Straight and the last word was "we will leave POSes on the back burner, because of... priorities."

and here we are, a year later, no news on POSes, except some minimal changes, that change nothing. tiercide was great, but a small change. t2 changes? hardly a priority, ice? nice change, makes the game more healthy. moon goo? good.

all in all, nothing close to the monumental task of opening up W-space, SOV changes, T2 production, and later on T3 production... doesn't take a genius to see that you are running on a skeleton crew while keeping most people busy working on something else. can we see it?

is it a Modular POS? can we dock in it? is it something for us industrialists? something nice for invention maybe?

it it something cool that serves no other purpose than being "cool"? because, unlike what some people think, if its not cool, then the feature is not good. Twisted

and if nothing on POSes was done, you guys do know that it wont get any easier as time goes by, right? Blink

X3 looked and played better than eve does now 5 years ago...
and no CCP should NEVER EVER acquire Egosoft as it would ruin Egosoft, it should be Egosoft acquring CCP.
Egosoft are quite clearly 5-10 years in front of CCP. I mean CCP have only recently introduced the new asteroids and space textures, X3 did this about 5 years before and it still looked better.
CCP have no idea really about graphics, look at dust.

If Egosoft made X3 into a MMO, CCP and EVE would disappear in an instant.

Do you know what's funny here? Egosoft has got like 30 developers and the whole company is in the 50-60 employees range. CCP is literally 10x bigger than Egosoft. In financial terms, X3 and its follow ups are estimate to have earned in 7 years some 20 million euros, roughly the same money as CCP earns in less than 3 months.

Stupid forum ate my post. It was long. :P

CCP is working on the escape plans, EVE is not in their "daring" tactics, thanks to Jita riots. DUST is shiete. Vampires are the future. ;P

600 people working all together on one project would be fun, but look up..

How many state of the art server farms do Egosoft have to maintain 23.5 hours a day to keep people playing their game? How many customer support staff to answer the elventybillionth request for ship reimbursement?

Running a MMO requires mountains more resources than publishing a single-player game.

So serving your customers reheated porridge is fine as long as the cooking is expensive? Someone should open a restaurant with that business plan... Roll

Being conservative, CCP is earning in the line of 100 million a year. If running EVE was so horrendously expensive that it ate 80 million per year, CCP still would have the manpower and resources to develop a whole new AAA game each two years. Roll

So, OP is excited about a trailer which is more conservative than the one CCP itself used as a "ten year" vision at the last Fanfest, and with far more primitive graphics to boot?

OK.

I'm sure that it'll be a good single-player sandbox game. I'll be sorely disappointed if EVE has only gotten that far in 10 years.

Tbh it looks like both star citizen and the x - series offer more engaging and immersive gameplay, which would be expected from single player or small multiplayer games.

The problem with eve, if it has one, is that there has been no fundamentally new content since the release of wormholes. A person that quit the game in 2009 and came back in 2013 would, for example, find life in one of the nullsec entities more or less the same as it is now. Sure we have a few new ships and doctrines, but fundamentally the gameplay is the same. Primary this, rep that, jam him, hotdrop them, etc.

Social Engineering and Feudalism Online. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

But if it were to change, maybe if we could for example partake in and gamble isk on EVR matches, that would help add variety and engaging gameplay to eve. And variety is the spice of life.
