Ice mining with Retrievers/Mackinaws vs. Covetors/Hulks

So I have been ice mining for a while now and pre-mining barge re-balance, I understood why people used Retrievers/Mackinaws over the Covetor, however now? Why do I see a tonne of Rets/Mack's in the ice belts?! I mean if solo-ing them, I can also understand, but they have Orca's and Freighters, so I really can't see why they'd use them?

Even says in the desciption of these ships: "Although it only has space to fit two mining or ice harvesting modules, a fast loading system allows those two module to do the work of three modules."

So effectively, a Mack can mine as fast as a standard, no-skilled hulk with this description and then it gets 1% reduction in ice harvester duration per exhumer level, fair enough, that's 3 lasers + 5%

But the Hulk gets a 4% reduction in ice harverster duration per exhumer level bonus... What am I missing?

Okay I also see that the mackinaw has 3 low slots allowing for another ice mining upgrade over the Hulk's 2, but does that make up the difference at Exhumers 5?

iirc a fully yield fitted Hulk mines ~7% more ice than a fully yield fitted Mackinaw. I think.

Can anyone shed some light on why people use Macks over the Hulk?


Hulk's Ore Hold - 8.500 m³
Mackinaw's Ore hold - 35.000 m³

You only have to empty the Ore Hold on a Mack every 46 minutes, but every 14 minutes for a Hulk.

Let's not kid ourselves - the vast majority of ice mining is done AFK, so these time figures matter.

disc.: all these numbers are with all lvl5 skills and no Orca boost.

If people are using macks to mine ice they're either solo or they're looking for more tank than a hulk can provide.

The "Isk Per Hour" application (found somewhere on these boards as well) appears to confirm this.

If hauling isn't a concern, and you are reasonably safe where you are mining, the Hulk beats the Mack. But not by a lot.
