8m isk for Mackinaw insurance?

I've just come back to the game and, unfortunately, met the goonswarn alliance for the first time today (in high sec) and, uh, my Mackinaw wasn't insured, but since insurance is defaulted to 40% anyway, I thought I'd get a decent 50-80m isk for my loss. Unforunately, when I checked my wallet, all I got was 8m. I thought that they'd say in one of the updates that insurance was now tapered towards current market prices. But, there's really no accounting for an 8m payout at 40% on a 180m+ isk ship, unless I have got my facts wrong.

Can someone perhaps clear up the confusion?

Insurance rate a severely lower on tech 2 ships. Always have been, to the point it is not worth insuring tech 2 ships.

Insurance is based on the market value of the base materials, which for T2 ships is not much, but which in their case is also adjusted based on the ship type.

For a Mack, the market value of the base materials is apparently 20M ISK.

Ships with the sole purpose of dieing are insured better. Interceptors come to mind. Although better does still not mean good.

Wait til you try to insure a T3, it's sorta depressing. "Right just spent nearly a billion on this thing, better get som... what?!"

There once was an interesting signature here... It has long since disapeared.

Well, slap 600 mil of mods on anything and your wallet gets upset.

The #1 misconception in EVE is that you need to slap bling onto a T3 in order for it to perform well.

Whats insurance?

I don't fly anything I cannot afford to lose.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Basically this. My favorite thing to watch though is a proteus or tengu tanking 10 people. Triple reppers are just ridiculous.

I cannot think of a better description for a mackinaw better than "sole purpose is dieing".

I always wondered if the insurance for T2 and T3 ships reflected the prices CCP wanted them to have.

As a pragmatist in EVE you learn to fly junk. EVE is a blow stuff up game and the Insurance system is hard coded to materials.

Eventually Goons will figure out how to insurance scam using Margin trading and CCP will have egg on their face again and fix it.

I highly doubt it. CCP could always rejig things if they wanted T2 and T3 ships to be cheaper. If I had to guess the lower insurance payout is either because a) CCP don't want to work out a system for factoring the values of goo and BPCs into insurance payouts or b) it's intended as an addition to the cost-benefit analysis of flying T2/T3/Faction over T1.

I think the only ship that the insurance fits the near ship cost is the Orca.
