Hello everyone. First off I want to start off by saying I think EVE online is an amazing game with limitless possibilities and over the past 3 or 4 years I've been playing off and on. Every time I come back I like to start fresh and make a new character and all, I get some idea of what it is I want to do in-game, then I quit after a month or two.

My question for you all is what made you stay, what path did you go, and how did you decide on that? I can never quite figure out what I want to do and I want to play this game so badly. I know there have been other numerous posts like this because I have read every single one I could find over the years. When I think of EVE online I imagine me standing 10 feet from an oasis in the desert scorched from the hot sun and theres some invisible barrier there keeping me from the cool water and I cannot figure out how to get to it.

If you have no idea what I just said I'm basically saying I'm tired of all the other MMO pieces of **** out there and I have great faith in EVE and want to play it. I just have no idea how to get myself into it and start having fun. It seems like all I do when I get on is queue a skill, sit in my hangar, and read chat.

What should I do guys? And don't forget I'm interested in hearing your stories.

I just need some kind of push in any direction man, it's frustrating. I have a lot of free time on my hands while I wait to leave for the USAF and need something to sink my time into.

I stayed because I found some great friends with whom I've had some of the best multiplayer experiences in my life. Unlike many other video games, Eve also has a "long-term success" aspect, which can keep you going with it even if something else (real life, another game, etc) distracts you for a while.

I suggest looking around and trying to join corps or other social groups who do stuff. It's then inevitable that you will get drawn into the fun. If you need more advice on finding a corp (or any other basic topic), feel free to ask in the New Citizens' forum.

Good luck!

I suppose I had a similar issue and moved all my stuff to lowsec and decided I was now living there, been surviving chatting to everyone who comes through the system and start recognizing the locals. I do everything there in need to survive run whichever site is thrown at me and kill rats, try and chase a few pilots and get,chased.. Met some people I can trust enough to fleet up too and some definitely not. Its very nice out there I suggest you try it or come live near me :-) this is without a corp btw atm I'm not really the corp kinda guy and not everyone is.

I disagree

I was lucky enough to be "spotted" by a couple of guys who were looking to recruit. At that point I had just lost my first Caracal having been smart-bombed on a lowsec gate. Tthe guy apologised to me after I convo'd him and asked him what the hell just happened . He refunded my Caracal and explained my mistakes.

I didn't really look back after that.

The guys that took me in were good fun. They were carebears but on a good scale. We went into wormholes, we did some semi-profitable indy stuff. Generally I was having a ball. When that all ended I was cast adrift.

I decided I needed an income and immediately began running trade whilst mission running. The ISK was ok for a new player.

I used to run silly games in Sankassen when I was drunk, just messing about in local and having some fun.

I ended up somehow in 0.0 when Initiative were messing about with (I think) -A- over Catch. Had a lot of good fun down there and flew in some really big fights.

I suppose what I am trying to say is - the opportunities are there. I just plugged away, chatted to people and had some fun. You never know where a chat is going to lead - for 3 months I was extorting a mining corp and making them sell me minerals at 15% below market average. It was all a lot of fun.

The number one thing I would advise anyone in this game is to throw away your social norm and just talk to people. They will make your day and you will make theirs.

Tis a social game after all! Hope you find a good niche for yourself and enjoy it.

Aaaaaaand relax.

I'll just copy-paste from the last thread:

The discovery that the game did not provide me with a reason so I had to find my own. This meant I could do whatever the hell I enjoyed at any given moment, and the game would never get in my way.

I can also recommend "Leeroy Jenkins" style PvE. Forcing a whole fleet to warp after you and save your ass in an incursion is really quite funny.

Not that I do incursions... Straight

look for a corp and make some friends. Playing alone can get boring really fast and for gods sake, stop creating new chars every time! This is not a usual MMO where you can reach max level in weeks. In some cases it can take a month just to train one skill to lvl5.
You always will lose your motivation to reach or do something if you start over every time.

When I joined as a player in 2003, it was for the graphics, the open ended gameplay and the backstory.

I quickly realized that I got a lot of enjoyment out of EVE from using it as a social platform, and flying with other like minded people. When I eventually started a corporation of my own, I was like "meh, I'm not leadership material, but I'll give it a go for a few months."

That corporation lasted seven years before I came to CCP and had to shut it down.

EVE is very much what you make of it. No one can tell you how you'll enjoy playing the game. Trying different things and finding your niche is all part of the journey, and is all part of character development.

Dive in, and have fun Blink

7 years going on now , (ragequitted 2 times) I like the diversetty , the meta gaming around it , i love it takes a small decade of two to learn all skills

I freaking love this game cause its unforgiving , and despised what most bitter dudes saying , its getting better every year (in my opinion , and yes even wis)

Also , and thats the greatest reason , Chribba plays this game , without him i would quit in a instans

When you say "what you make of it" you really mean it...
Keep it up, what you've made of it is pretty damn awesome...

Started in 2005 after everquest went to garbage, Earth and Beyond went belly up, and DAOC stopped being interesting. Quit a few times sporadically throughout the years due to boredom. That came from not joining up with a corp for many years. Finally after rejoining the 4th time, took the leap and jumped into eve university, joining the amarr mining camp. Had some good times pewing asteroids. Jumped on coms and had a good time with the original creators. Hehe we did a benefit drive for eve u, mass strip mining half the constellation and sending the ore to uni to help fund it. That was a 24 hour mining op.

Left them, wandered around trying to figure out where and what to do. Started looking for a nullsec corporation before I ran into a wormhole corporation's recruitment thread. I figured that would be cool "knew 0 about wormholes", apped up, and joined the corporation. Had some good times throwing my ships at the fights that would come.

We shutdown the hole, and looked for a new home (we're in a c4, and wanted a c2 for more traffic). Ran into a old friend of another corp and we split shared a c2 for months. At the time we were in another smaller hole but it wasnt enough to support the 200 people we had at that time.

At the time we got into talks with the alliance, joined soon after, and here we are.

It is odd because some of the players know each other very well. There is a great comrodary you don't see in other games.

I'm sure someday I'll leave and come back, its like everquest. You quit, come back, play, quit, comeback, etc etc.

You do keep coming back though.

Yaay!!!!

Personally I can't get enough of the metagame, the media surrounding it and like a lot of others, the friendships it has borne.

Making nerdy websites has it's charm too Blink

I joined in 2005. Since then I've been a nullsec fleet nobody, worked my way up to FC, then senior FC, then top-level leadership. Then we got BoBstomped and the alliance disbanded so I went into FW, then mercenary work, and even some piracy. After a while I decided to switch to highsec industry, and that's turned out to be an entertaining challenge all by itself. Right now I'm enjoying exploration.

What keeps me in the game? The knowledge that there's still plenty of stuff I haven't done, and that all of the stuff I previously enjoyed will welcome me back any time I feel like returning to it.

The people aren't half bad, either.
