By far a Mackinaw. No contest. Strip miners > mining lasers, plus a lot bigger ore hold.

Venture is the ultimate gas harvester though, and again no contest as mining barges and exhumers cannot fit gas harvesters (requires turret hardpoints).

If you are new to mining, go ahead and use the venture to get into it. Save up to a retriever (ret). At least two, but 3 is preferable.
Once you get a ret work on the mack.

This is assuming you are planning on mining in high sec.

If you plan on mining in low/null area, Venture is a great ship. Very great for mining gas for little risk.
If you want to mine ore/ice, work on getting into a Procurer. I wouldn't bother sitting into a skiff to mine in these area's, as all it takes is 1 person with a +3 warp core disruption to ruin your day. And you WILL lose your ship. If you are lucky, the warp core stab's you have on will be enough.

Only get a hulk if you have a regular fleet boost from an Orca and have a hauler.

tl;dr --> Venture - way wimpy + small ore hold = not really useful :: Mack = bread and butter solo miner :: Hulk = kick azz mining boat in fleets.

The Venture is a seriously wimpy mining boat. Supposedly it can be configured for lo/null because with it's +warp core buff and a warp core stab in it's one low slot, you can make an escape from pirates. But good luck handling ANY lo sec ratz. If you configure it for escape, it cannot handle lo sec ratz - it's too wimpy. You have to fly off and find some rocks without NPCs - good luck with that.

Lately, I've been using my Venture as a glorified shuttle that can haul some hi end ore around.

For your daily mining Ops :: Mack or Hulk.

Mack is truly for independent miners. Due to it's huge ore bay, you gain efficiency, i.e., you don't have to return to the station very often to drop off cargo.

The Hulk is very effective when used in a fleet with an Orca/Rorq. The Hulk's ore bay fills in just a few cycles - so there is zero efficiency alone - but it's fairly good if you are xferring to the Orca throughout the mining Op.

Your use of "supposedly" suggests you haven't actually tried it, and yet you're dismissing it as "wimpy"?

First, I'd like to point out that ducking into nullsec to mine ore is not all that profitable anyway, IMO, not unless you're part of a dedicated nullsec corp that can provide security. Your ISK draw per hour mining Veldspar in high-sec in a Retriever would be more than mining Hemorphite in nullsec with a Venture. And low-sec is not worth it at all. Period.

Back to the Venture: Wormholes are where the Venture shines. Because of how cheap it is to buy and fit, it makes for low risk wormhole ops for potentially high rewards. Plus its ability to make a quick getaway can help. And it can harvest gas. which can actually make nullsec trips profitable. I assure you, the Venture is not wimpy at all. Only high-sec mining becomes pointless on it, once you're in a barge.

With T2 fittings, the Mackinaw's yield is high enough that you only take one cycle longer than a Retriever with the same fittings to fill up your ore bay. So that massive ore bay actually increases the amount of ore you bring in per trip without extending your trip's length by much.

In any case, as everyone's noted, Mackinaw is the way to go for high-sec solo mining. Don't try to jump straight into a Mackinaw, though; get a Retriever first, and training up skills for T2 modules before turning your gaze on the Mackinaw. Basically: Venture ---> Retriever T1 fittings ---> Retriever T2 fittings ---> Mackinaw.
