What would be really cool is if your ship skin reflected your rigs. So if you had cargohold rigs, for example, big side containers would appear on your ship skin. that would be neat.

I can't believe the search button actually found what I was looking for! Big smile

I would love to see visual evidence of rigs on ships in space, though I don't think rigs need to be incorporated into ship skins.

I don't know what would be the best way to implement "visual rigs", but it would be very cool if for example:

  • Exploration rigs put a small satellite dish on the side of the hull
  • Weapon rigs resulted in external heat syncs or magazines attached to the guns/missiles
  • Astronautic rigs put an extra "exhaust pipe" attached to the ship's main engine
  • Engineering rigs look like an auxiliary reactor latched onto the under belly of the ship
  • Etc...

Many of our mods are visible on the ship in space somehow, time to go all the way!

This would be cool. It'd be really hard to do without model changes though, as one would expect cargo hold expanders to actually expand t he cargo hold. I'm wondering if you could perhaps have rig sockets on the bottoms of ships or something which changed based on the rig. Adding a slight bump, or as you point out, a dish or heat sinks.

I thought maybe each model could get a "rig hardpoint" for each category of rig. If a rig from a particular category is present, a 3D object is "plugged into" the appropriate hardpoint. There's no need for 3 trimark rigs to be visible (for example), just the 1.

That could work well. It might be tough for some of the smaller frigate/destroyer grade ships. But especially on battleships and such I see a lot of options there.
