So I'm still pretty noob (just about a month in only) and one of my focuses has been on exploration. I've been able to have some decent success so far in Low-sec by watching local, staying cloaked, warping out if I feel danger, etc, etc...

So I thought I'd give W-space a try and scanned down a Data site in the first -1.0 I landed in. JACKPOT right? Lol

Warped in a little ways out and saw those darned sleepers guarding my booty. Ok, new plan. Go back and get my Caracal (very mediocre fit, but figured more defense than a dessie) then take these dudes out and claim my reward.

Long story short, I got one shot by the first one to see me at a range of about 55K. Ugh

So, I guess my question is am I just in over my head in W-space in terms of exploration? Any sneakier tactics I can use to get those juicy sites w/o a frontal assault? I read that most (all?) data/relic sites are patrolled by sleepers and they seem out of my league from a combat standpoint as I wasnt even able to try to cheese-kite them one at a time.

Any help appreciated, even if its "What the f were you doing in W-space newb??". Blink

You've been playing EvE for 6 years and gate camping is the best idea you can come up with? XD

You need an omni-tanked (tanked against all damage types) battlecruiser to do C1 or C2 wormhole sites, higher level wormholes are even harder.

WHs are not really newbie material.

Edit: to see what type of WH it is, take it's J number and look it on on dotlan (or any one of the other WH mapping sites)

Nah, take a cheap ship in, learn d-scan, get a feel for WH space, get familiar with WH space, then when you do take that BC in, you might get it out in one piece.

The sleepers are the lesser danger in WH space....

I've seen WH close right in front of me as I was deciding on whether I should jump in or not.

I think the universe was trying to tell me something.

Thanks all, I had a hunch I was just being too greedy too fast. lol

Looks like I'll be sticking to Low/Null for the foreseeable future which is fine, there's some decent lootz out there. Smile

There are some things I think you can do in WH space as a new character. Just not much.

For instance, you could just take a Venture mining frigate, fit it with a cloaking device, probes, and gas miners and make runs into wormholes to ninja some gas mining.

Since the Sleepers don't spawn as gas sites for... what is it... 15 minutes? You can actually fill up a Venture hull and be on your way before the Sleepers even arrive. Then you just unload your frigate, and move on to another gas site.

The biggest drawback I've run into in doing this is that gas mining and cloaking skills are fairly expensive compared to the other newbie skills you'll have bought so far. Some of the equipment is fairly pricey too - like cloaking devices and gas miners.

Haven't tried it yet, but want to.

Get into a covert ops ship with a covert ops cloak and you can fly around wormhole systems with ease, including sites and anomalies. Generally they are far safer than null space due to being so empty. The biggest threat are the sleepers since they target and scram very fast and at very long range so running sites as a noob is probably not recommended.

However, for newer players the advantage of wormholes is in moving around: The best data sites and relic sites are in null space since, unlike wormhole space, they do not have NPCs. Unfortunately, getting to those null sites can be difficult since the gates from low sec to null are very often camped and bubbled, making conventional travel very risky.

Using wormholes you can tunnel directly out of high sec space and sometimes find a route that will let you drop into deep null sec within minutes. Then you've got your own private null system to play with for 12 hours with the added benefit of a quick route back to the trade hubs to sell your booty.

W-Space is probably the least new player friendly area of EVE. There _is_ stuff you can do, but it only really gets fun.
Explore other parts of EVE until you got some playing under your belt.

I'm still a noob player - 2 months in - and W-space has been quite playable and lucrative - so far. I'm using a Venture with gas harvesters and a core probe fitted - but no cloak. Wormholes are a tootle to find from hi-sec and I'm finding gas sites - that are worth harvesting - in about half of them.

I can fill the ore bay of my Venture in about 20 mins - I'm watching for spawns and pirates constantly - and probing the rest of the w-space if I hadn't completed when I found the gas site. Making about 4M ISK in 20 mins harvesting (which pretty much clears the worthwhile gas with my T1 harvesters) - then bale when the spawns arrive - its almost exactly 20 each time.

Far more exciting than mining and seems excellent experience. I've taken the view that I don't want to invest heavily in gas skills (or mining) so this fit cost a couple of days training and 10M ISK for the ship (the cost is in the harvesters I). I don't plan on doing this long term, but need the ISK to risk on ships elsewhere.

Please realise this is the EVE New Citizens Q&A, no need to be rude.
Judging from your post you yourself didn't realise it either what you undertook when reading your own two examples.

He, as I do, apparently likes to try and experience things for himself. It's fun, doing things where the consequences are not immediately clear.
I for one, OP, commend you for being bold and trying.

I too, went into a Wormhole on my own after probing one down.
I bookmarked the entry (or exit as you please) and figured I'd inspect a few anomalies.

The first one had some asteroids, the second was called 'Phase Catalyst Node'.
I was 110km away from unknown rats and structures.

I got the message 'Capsule Ejected' 2 seconds after landing.

A website link I was given shortly after my escapade is http://www.staticmapper.com/

Not sure how much it will help, but perhaps in the near future it will serve you (and me) more.

Keep experiencing stuff solo, being 'newb' is fun.

That, I completely overlooked, while i'm normally so thorough when reading posts Shocked

This means I am at fault and apologise for being unaware that these where the OP's own words.

I will mildly slap myself across the face this time.

OP: you remind me of my first tries at wormholes, where I promptly steered back and made the run upon landing at 100 on an anom with my magnate, whose only weapon was a fierce hobgoblin I (whether it died or was soothed back to wildlife by the local sleepers, I don't know, I just hope if he changed into an Awakened Juggernaut and I stumble upon it someday, he'll remember me... or maybe not). The second time was almost as fierce a fight, I warped in my poorly fitted Omen and decided to run away screaming after a couple shots (or maybe it was my hull alarm screaming), I don't remember, but then I decided to err on the side of patience.

There are a few things a new player can do there, but for the most, you will need a bit more experience under your belt to bring it out. In a C1/C2, with a properly sized corp, there is stuff to do for young players, but not alone unless you really know what you're doing as mistakes can quickly become expensive.

Don't bar it from future experiences, take the time to learn more on the game and keep it cheap if you try again, by the time you know it well enough, then you can risk more shiny ships.

Good on you! Having an adventure is always fun.

Side note: all wormhole space is -1.0. "Nullsec" space counts as everything from 0.0 to -1.0. In regular known space, that number corresponds to the system's "truesec" rating, an indicator of the quality of NPCs, anomalies, exploration sites, etc.

To tell the difference of what wormhole you landed in, there are a few ways. One is to be a ninja and memorize how all wormholes look, their names, what effects they have, and other hints. Or, if you'd rather spare your memory, you can use a map tool such as DOTLAN. Stick the system's J-number into the search bar, and you'll get info about it. For example, this is the info about the J164610 wormhole system is here.

The best indicator of whether you can handle a wormhole or not is the wormhole "class", a 1-6 classification that specifies how dangerous the NPCs and other effects are. You can find more info about this on the Eve Wiki if you're curious.

Good luck!

Good luck!

1+2 being soloable in a well fit Battlecruiser, 3 can be soloed in a Battlecruiser (slowly) but a Battleship or Strategic Cruiser is the norm, for a 4 bring friends, for a 5 or 6 bring moar friends especially if they can use Carriers (Cap Escalations are lucrative).

Thx to all, the advice and linked resources have been great!

Getting close to ready to having a T2 fitted cruiser ready to try Wspace again.

Low sec has been ok, but at the start I was averaging around 15-20MM per data/relic site (averaging some total busts and the occasional nice BPC), but I seem to have regressed to a mean of about 8-10MM per site which isnt quite what I'm looking for.

I'm probably a couple weeks off from having the fit I want/need but I'm heading back out when I do since it seems like thats where the real paydirt is.

Back to the low sec exploration and PI grind... FOR NOW! Cool

Thanks again peeps.

^^ This. People will probably slate me for saying this, but as you're Caldari the Drake would be a firm favorite. When my other character was doing wormholes, it was a common sight.
