Is There a Market For "Mercenaries"?

So, first of all, I'm not sure if "mercenary" is the right term. Basically, I am wondering if there is a market to sell services as a pilot.

Here's my thoughts ...

I have learned that I am not all that good at combat (2 battleships and 3 cruisers later), but I do want to get involved in some action. So, why not infiltration? I am thinking of buying a covert ops frigate, a Nemesis, I think, and then hire out to infiltrate the target system, report on their ships and then run a covert cynosaural field for my employer's fleet to jump into the system.

So, is this a workable?
Are there any "hiring halls" or such?
How suicidal is this?
What sort of rates are applicable?
Money up front, or is there some sort of escrow option?

There's a market for it in the Crime and Punishment forums, yes.

You can even sell chattime, especially sexy chattime.

There is a market for literally everything out there ...

I wish there was an in-game mercenary market place, I'm sure we've been promised it before in previous patches, but it hasn't materialised yet. It would be good to rate mercs with details of their reliability and general trustworthy-(I am cringing now)-ness. In the meantime there's crime and punishment.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Join the chat channel "MERC Contracts" in game. State your business.

So, is this a workable?
If you can come to a financial agreement with the right group - sure.

Are there any "hiring halls" or such?
Crime and Punishment subforum and "MERC Contracts" in game channel. Serious mercs are unlikely to risk their reputation for a one-off gank.

How suicidal is this?
EVE is EVE so there's always that chance but less likely if you select an established group.

What sort of rates are applicable?
Will depend on specficially what you need and where...

Money up front, or is there some sort of escrow option?
Again, this will depend on the group but some kind of upfront payment may well be required.

Supplement that tally with at-least 100-300 Frigates before you right yourself off.

You might get some work scouting and reporting intel.

It'll take a good bit of time building your reputation before anyone trusts you to light a cyno for them in a hostile system though. And to be honest, the intel is the more valuable service. Anyone can get a cyno alt into a system.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Scouting and cynoing is not rented out because it's an obvious security issue if you put that into the hands of a stranger. So 0.0 alliances have alts for such work but they also rely on members who do scouting full time. If you ever get into such an alliance, you could be a scout and (covert) cyno. Not as a lone merch.

If you want to work as a merch for various customers, check out the channels suggested to you and maybe join an established merch corp.

There are mercenary corporations already around. You may just want to join one of them.

Yaay!!!!
