How do I figure this out?
There is much to learn about this game and I try to research everything I can before coming to the forums to make posts that have already been made 1000 times, but I can't figure this out. If someone says " You need a 500 dps tank" what does it mean? How do I put these numbers together?
I'm a month in to EVE and breezing through level 3 missions. I feel like I could take on level 4 missions without a problem, but I see the recommended tank/dps for a newer player should be 500/500. I can achieve the 500 dps but I'm not sure how to tell what sort of tank I have other then looking at my shield/armor hp, resistances and repair module.

DPS Tank.
Think of it as DPS vs HPS (Heal per Second)

If you take 100 DPS You need 100 HPS to counter it.
So when somebody says you need 500 DPS tank, just means you need to be able to pump out 500 HPS.

Lets look at an example. I am getting hit for 2100 dmg once every 7 seconds.
Lets assume this dmg is after resistance check. This would only be 300 DPS. I would need at least 300 HPS to counter it. If I do, it would mean I have at least 300 DPS Tank.

Hope this helped.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

its kind of silly to crunch the numbers when tanks are fairly standardized
sure its ok to understand the minimum you need to survive, but a good tank does not an effective pilot make.
The sum of a fit suited for the task at hand is so much more important than its individual parts.
