Sidekick Problems

Hey there!

I stated playing EVE a few days ago and wanted my Main to be a fulltime Miner and Refiner.

Due to Mining can be a bit boring with a Venture, I got a Sidekick and now I am not sure, what I should do with her.

I don't wanna go for a second Miner, so I thought about my options. It would be good, if those two Chars could make a nice team.

I got a few options and want you to tell me, if that is stupid or not.

1. I get her an Orca and help my Main with his mining (Otherwise I could just join a Corp which runs "Mining Ops")
2. I go for Producing and Researching (I am not sure, if this is good for a beginner, because right now I have no Idea what you could produce and where to sell it.)
3. I go for trading and transporting (I think this is the best idea, because I thought of something like let my Main mine and refine the stuff and let my sidekick run through the galaxy looking for good deals take the refined ore there and come back with something useful and so on...)
4. I go for the PvP Stuff and let my Main make money for my Sidekick, cause War is expensive. (I think this needs to much time to get good at it and I dont have that much time. I think PvP can come, when I know all of the mechanics a bit better.)

So what do you think?

1. not so great short term. Maths work out to needing at least four (4!) people in fleet to make the orca better than another miner. However, the Orca is still a great ship to have around.
2. not too hard to start manufacturing. Start out small (ammo) and go from there.
3. hauling is boring as hell ... and not exactly "safe" (nothing is)
4. Mechanics will take you a week to learn (if you're a fast learner). It's the other skill that takes "forever". If you wanna learn PVP, best way is to build 10 of exactly the same fit combat frigate, and then go looking for a fight. When you lose all of them, repeat ... take what you've learned (both in-game skills, and what you've learned as a player) and tweak the fittings, then repeat the "looking for a fight" bit. Do so until you get comfortable enough with fitting and fighting to move to larger ships.

Best bet would be to get into a corp that has some vets (but are rookie-friendly), so you don't have to go through the learning pains alone.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Well thanks for that advice. I'll think about it.

But let's assume I go for #3, which is basically fetsching the refined Ore, bring it to a place with better prices fetch some goods there, which are needed in my Miners Area and repeat.

What would be a good ship for that and should I go for the trading skills?

If you wan tot manufacture, might be worth to have those skill son both accounts so you can build more stuff at once.

Orca is not worth it for just 2 accounts. maybe run missions and train basic salvaging on the miner, you can then ratt while you mine, or salvage while you mission.

With the assumption that you're in a Retriever (so not using your alt to haul from the belt to the station).

Low volume, Low value (up to about 10m ISK) - an industrial (e.g. Wreathe)
Medium volume, low value (100-300m ISK)- an Orca
High volume, low value (up to 1b ISK) - a freighter

Low volume, high value (such as blueprints, where you're dumping 500m-1.5b on one print)- something that can cloak (e.g. Prowler or a stealth bomber or a Cov Ops), also, having insta-undock points from the station.
Medium volume, high value - split into "low-value" shipments and haul in an Orca, or a freighter
high volume, high value - Red/Black/Blue Frog or one of their competitors, with appropriate collateral and payout.

Now, these are general rules of thumb. As soon as you undock, you're consenting to PvP and all that it entails, up to and including the loss of your ship/stuff.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

This is my two cents on the question..

i would go hauler / leadership / salvager alt.

hauler to move anything and everything aroudn with the end goal of getting into a freighter.
leadership to boost your main toon in whatever they are doing
salvager in case you chose to do missioning / ratting

if you end up deciding to do down the prod / research / PI / POS side of things you can deviate .. but having a hauler base for toon #2 is always a good idea imho.

History is the study of change.

Thanks!

I decided to go the hauling, trading way.
My Main isnt that far in refining, but when he is ready, I will trade his refined ore around!
