This is the OP again. I know many of you believe I am many things.

1. Trollll
2. Fanbois for another game
3. EVE noob

To be completely honest I am all 3.

I did sprinkle elements of trolling and elements of being a fanbois of another game, but I am an EVE noob too.

Here is my story. First off I am pretty old in terms of gaming. My first gaming console was the Atari 2600 and it came with Combat. Mind blowing at the time. I later jumped to a Comodore 64 and began playing games like Karateka. I did have a nintendo and my first game for it was Kid Icarus and then Metroid. Anyway, the last console game I played was Golden Eye on the N64. After that I stopped gaming until 2003-04. A friend of mine says he has been playing this awesome mmo called Star Wars Galaxies. He convinced me to give it a try and I have been stuck in the mmo scene ever since. I played SWG until it was ruined by SOE. I then played Lineage II for 8 years.

I have been mmo homeless for the past year basically. I have been desperately searching for that magical game that tickles your pickle. You know what I am talking about. It is that game you think about 24/7. While friends and family are speaking to you, all you are thinking about is logging on to your Digital Drug of choice and playing for hours on end.

I went to the MMORPG site recently and looked at their top 10 of games in Development. Anyway, I found Star Citizen. If the developers continue on their path and actually deliver on it, I am sold on that game. BUT, that game will not be out for at least 18 months. So, I said to my friends, lets try EVEonline. It has a proven track record. It is 10 years strong. Lets go and play the game until SC launches.

EVE does not suck. I had been reading through the "ISKtheguide" 400 page plus manual and EVE is impressive. The depth and detail of this game is like no other I have played. I am truly impressed. The population and the community was even more impressive. I see drama all over the boards. I see a highly competitive game. That is something I truly enjoy. But, the main reason my friends and I were going to try EVE was to practice flying space craft. I read through a bunch of information on the game and I never ran into anything saying that you do not actually fly the ship in a flight simulator kind of way.

Anyway, the EVE way of flying is not the way I envisioned it would be. I had my heart set on a flight simulator , in the cockpit and dog fighting style. That was the main reason why I wanted to try the game. I did not want to play James Tiberius Kirk clicking a radial to determine flight. I was hoping more for a flight stick and reticle.

I watched this video and thought, "Damn that looks crazy, as in awesome and spectacular". It was called the battle of Asakai:

Anyway, if I did play here, I am sure I could carve a niche for myself. But, like I said the main reason for me to try this game was because I thought I actually flew the spacecraft like an actual simulator.

I was just asking, "What the hook is" , since for me the hook I was hoping for was a true Sci-Fi space combat simulator (EVE is not) with an in depth detailed upgradeable ship(s) (which EVE does have).

Anyway, that is where I was coming from.

Who knows, I may still try it. I have found nothing out there that really interests me. Someone else in this thread did mention the EVE Evr. I am really interested in the Oculus Rift. Will EVE be making another EVE type game for the Oculus Rift?

P.S.
About the uninstall, I was kidding. I have not uninstalled it yet. I have few other games I do not play that are still on my hard drive.

Hong Kong Phooey is a children's cartoon character lol, a martial arts janitor that works in a police station and works as a secret crimefighter.

As for the EVE issues..... flying ships manually is nice but it physically isn't possible on a game the size of EVE. Star Citizen looks fantastic and I will definitely be playing it, but it'll never be on a scale like EVE. EVE has to use military grade hardware for the server just to handle things the way they are, let alone with thousands of players using joysticks and manual controls constantly adjusting their course. Star Citizen will never be the size and scope of EVE, it'll be a more small-scale thing.

EVE's greatest asset is that it's a sandbox. If you want to do something then you can do it, anything goes, as long as it's not an exploit of game mechanics. If you want to murder people, steal, rip them off, build an empire, be a gun for hire, be a spy, be a trader, be a manufacturer, be an explorer, some people even run their own gambling websites/rings, you can do whatever you want. It's about the interaction with other players and how what you do can affect them. There's no barriers to say what you can and can't do, and no class system to limit your abilities. A loss in EVE is permanent, there's no "respawn ship" button. That's what makes EVE stand apart.

Hm, I appreciate this coming out Lol

Of any other sandbox game I don't know any that would be a combination of ... I don't know, Descent and EVE, which is most probably what you're looking for. However, if you don't mind fantasy setting you may try

Wurm Online
Mortal Online
well, Ultima Online :-D

These are very niche game, with quite low playerbase (comparing to EVE), and for you it may be a filler until SC. However, I would strongly recommend to not spam these games' forums stating how SC is better; it's really rude, and it was rude here ... Ugh

Any debate about SC unfortunately doesnt belong here to New Citizens Q&A, but it has perfect place in other subforums. (otherwise I'd start a debate about SC right now, as this game interests me as well)

Interesting. This may be something people should mention more often then :) although after some time rightclick->warp comes as something completely natural...

Well... I don't play football simulators, but I believe there are many people who happily play football simulators and don't want to play MMO sandboxes, because ... well, they prefer football simulators.

CCP is the name of company, their concept is not to bake new games every year, they prefer to think about their games as different windows to the New Eden (EVE galaxy). So if there will be Oculus Rift used by CCP, it will be somewhat connected to actual New Eden. It's similar with DUST514, another game by CCP, basically MMO first person shooter set on the planets of New Eden, where players can (and do) interact with us capsuleers. When you go through certain regions and see sudden spike of names with blue background in your local, it's them - dustbunnies :)

Think of it this way: in EVE, you don't actually go hands-on and fly your ship; you command your ship. It's like the difference between Mr. Sulu and Captain Kirk.
