Why can't I use a joystick to steer my spaceship?

I've been wondering this since day 1 in EVE. Don't people find it annoying clicking random points in space to steer their ships? Why can't i plug in a flight sim joystick and use that? Seriously is it so much to ask?

I would actually play this game but I find the current way of navigating through space with a mouse tedious and unnecessary.

Joysticks would make manual orbits a breeze, just sayin.

Don't find the current way annoying at all. I can safely say I think using a joystick would be more irritating.

It could be done, but it wouldn't be what you'd expect.

Remember, Eve runs on 1-sec ticks. Any change of direction/vector you input with your joystick, would only be effective once a second.

Yes it is.

In EVE you are the captain of a ship, not it's pilot. Kirk, Janeway, Adama, picard, Dylan Hunt etc etc didn't use no stinkin joysticks.

Its not that type of game. Also with this many people playing the servers would have to be GODLY. At the moment the servers go by 1 Second ticks so it only checks every 1 second. Were it to go to joystick you would need to increase that to at least 0.1/2 second ticks.so thats a 10 times increase on server load. Imagine Lag or TiDi with a joystick, it would be unplayable.

Maybe in a few years when technology has increased there might be an option to fly say a frigate manually but as of this point its not technically possible without ruining a few things which make eve great.

Because in this game we click our way through space. It's not going to change. Enjoy, and fly, er, I mean, click safe! Big smile

Because you command a ship, you don't fly it.

All it took was 1 stupid useless scene in Star Trek: Insurrection and everyone wants to use a joystick to pilot giant space submarines.

Also, joystick piloting doesn't work well with the server tick system currently used.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

because joystick doesn't have F1

but the real answer is that CCP didn't have the balls to change anything on the core flight mechanics so far. The collision detection is probably unchanged since release.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Does any of the "you are only the captain of the ship" sayer knows anything about EVE lore?

As a capsuleer you command every aspect of the ship. Sitting in your capsule, you are not only the captain, but also the pilot, the weapon systems officer and many things more. The crew just does very low level tasks.

OP, I think you should be keeping an eye on EVR.

Nope, EVE VR will obviously use mind control techniques. It's the future!

Wait, did the Enterprise crash in that move? That was Insurrection, right? I thought they crashed in Generations. P

Either way Insurrection sucked so proof not to use joysticks. Lol
