Auction Sales Question

Hello!

Here for my first post. My question is, why do so many people run auctions on the Sell Orders forum instead of using the in-game auction contracts? It seems like the latter would be way simpler.

For example, this one: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=259105&find=unread

Thanks!

In addition to the fact that ingame auction contracts are very limited - those sell orders are for exceptionally rare and expensive items. Note that the high bids on the thread you linked range from 45-80 billion ISK

Sure, they're expensive, but it's not like there's a limit on how high the in-game contracts can be listed for.

What do you mean by "very limited"?

When you're putting such a ridiculous amount of ISK on the line you want a very fine control over how the auction is handled. Ingame auctions don't give you flexibility over how long the auction will run for, minimum starting bids, snipe timers, etc. If you're dealing with such a ridiculous amount of ISK in a single transaction it makes sense to use the slightly less convenient method (ie the forums) that will give you more control.

The guy in the post you linked, for example, gave a long list of items but said he only was going to sell a couple of them. He specified a 1bn bid increment and a 5 minute sniper. Furthermore, because it's not tied up in escrow, he can do whatever the damn hell he wants with the items until he actually transfers them over. He can even decide "Well, I didn't actually want to sell this anyway..."

When creating a public contract for either an auction or item exchange, a % of the contract's final ISK value is paid to the system.
This means that when you are dealing with higher-value items, you stand to lose a significant amount of ISK when using the public contracts system.

Furthermore, public contracts can only be accepted by a pilot who is in the same region as the location the contract's created at.

Private contracts are quite the opposite - they only ever have a 10,000 ISK fee, and may be accepted from any system.
Additionally, private contracts are private, meaning only the pilots involved in them can see them in history, whereas all completed public contracts can be viewed by all players.
