This post is aimed at the Dev team mainly, but comments about my random thoughts are always welcome Lol

Where do people see Eve in say 1 years, 2 years and even 5 years time, why I ask is because of an article on a UK tech site The Register:

Quote:
WoW subscriptions had fallen to 10.3 million, down from the 11.4 million users playing the game in March 2011

Yes, I know it's WoW and people can berate it, it then goes on to note that Star Trek Online has gone free to play and Lego Universe is closing. People are going to probably ask how is this related to Eve, my answer is that Eve at the end of the day is one of the few top MMORPG's and it's one of the few that charges, should the fact that so many are going free to play be a worry?

Are the number of Eve subscribers still growing? (I hope so!)

YES.

Eve gets about 47 000 new subs per year according to this chart.

Eve subscription numbers have been growing steadily since its launch. They stagnated for the first time this summer following the fluster-cluck that was Incarna/Fearless. However I'd assume if CCP continues to iterate on space content, then EVE will continue to grow.

EVE is a niche game for space nerds, we space nerds will continue to procreate, and assuming no one manages to create a game that can compete with EVE within its niche, EVE will last quite a while.

What would be more intesting is how many of those 1.1 million accounts were secondary accounts for people who are actually still playing the game.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

I think it would be naive to assume that the financial mess the world is in won't effect EVE in some way. It may actually have a positive impact as $15 a month is a fairly cheap in comparison to having a night out to see the movies or going out for diner. However, we just have to wait and see. As for WoW losing subs it's no real surprise as there a LOT of FTP games and other games on the market such as Rift that are very similar to what WoW has to offer. Much of the playerbase of WoW also play on x-box live and other platforms so they will also lose some sub because that. Let's not forget that WoW has been going on for some time now and players will just get fed up and will look for something new in between their expansions.

Its this really. EVE has no direct competitors outside if games like Perpetuum that is at best... unstable. Oh and also that game that used screenshots of ships from EVE in its advertisements.

According to Morhaime, the majority of these declines continues to come from the East, though the game continues to be "one of the most popular online games in China, and remains by far the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world."

WoW is dropping in popularity primarily because the gameplay model is not very engaging and is extremely cyclical. In addition the WoW model has been repeated in almost every other mmo out there, people are just sick of it. This is also why so many of them have been forced to adopt a FtP model, they have been attempting to directly compete with blizzard by doing the same thing they do, only doing it worse.

So no, people are willing to pay for a game that they enjoy. If CCP focus's on it's niche audience and does not try to just become another WoW, then they will do just fine.

Perhaps all those WoW folks heard about CCP's glorious new direction and are Subbing as we speak.

As long as EVE's population is larger than Iceland's population, the game is fine as it is.

Hmm with WoW's new Sub offer i think we'll see the numbers go back up pretty quick, a free copy of Diablo III when it releases is a fairly nice offer....

You can't compare Eve and Wow, I know many try to, but they are so different in sooo many ways......

Eve will remain the most popular Spaceship game there is because there are no others that can really compete, when there is ....eve will probably decline in numbers.....I ask you, if a new game came out that had fantastic graphics, a sandbox environment but focused more on exploration and empire building than pvp, how many would leave eve?

None.

We would play both.

We have several accounts.. what makes you think we wouldn't at least have one on each?

I still keep my perp acc subbed even though i don't play it very often.

As long as EVE doesnt add pandas that know karate or whales that are doctors should be safe. Think comparing it to star wars galaxy is more apt. Suppose once its natural life is over or a bigger eve supercedes it will be here I suppose.

From my limited experience, not too many multi-boxers in WoW as the core demographic is much more casual and all classes could (with the ability to use two different talent specializations) solo with ease. Or switch specs to operate as tank / healer / DPS as needed.

There was very little in WoW that benefited from having a 2nd account.
