Battle Report: Fall of Innia

This is Mirax Terrik, live from Innia, reporting on the ultra-nationalist Templis Dragonaors alliance and the fierce factional warfare occurring throughout the Innia war-torn solar system. For the past few months, Innia has been the focal point of this alliance and has seen heavy fighting from both the Gallente and Caldari militias. After the crushing defeat the Caldari Militia faced at Enaluri in April, Templis Dragonaors retreated to lick their wounds outside of factional warfare space. They quickly regained their balance and pushed the Gallente Federation out of key pipeline systems such as Kehjari and Martoh. In less than two weeks from the fall of Enaluri, the ultra-nationalist group retook their founding system, Innia, and fortified it against further attacks.

This move was criticized by smaller groups within Templis Dragonaors for moving ahead too quickly. These disagreeing factions pointed out Templis Dragonaors had not fully recuperated in terms of manpower, logistics, and firepower. Unfortunately, for the ultra-nationalist group, these fears were warranted. After a securing their home system, Templis Dragonaors and other Caldari Militia groups attempted to capture the next-door Gallente stronghold of Eha.

After strong initial progress in “flipping” the solar system, the Gallente corporations in the region united to form a strong defensive line. As more Gallente rose to the call of liberty and freedom, the defense of Eha turned into an offensive thrust into the next door solar system of Innia. The next three days were fraught with explosions, wrecks, and battles. Warfare escalating into cruiser-sized vessels and multiple large-scale fights were the norm instead of the exception. Unfortunately for Templis Dragonaors, Innia fell within three short brutal days. Inside sources report the drastic influx of the Gallente and internal problems within the general Caldari militia and even inside Templis Dragonaors led to the downfall of Innia.

Disheartened by the loss of their home system, Templis Dragonaors once again retreated to the fringes of Caldari space to re-plan and re-think their strategy. This time around, Templis Dragonaors took their time to plan and coordinate with the rest of the Caldari Militia. Slowly, but surely, the ultra-nationalist organization pushed out of Hykanima and back towards their system of origin. This time, they solidified their logistics division, recruited hundreds of talented new pilots, and purchased hundreds of new ships. Templis Dragonaors wasn’t the only Caldari alliance going on the offensive. The entirety of the general Caldari militia started a massive offensive campaign.

While large fleet fights are often celebrated and applauded by the general public and are assumed to be turning points in warfare, this was not the case for this offensive. Thousands of Caldari participated in millions of guerilla attacks across Gallente space. While each attack might only scratch the surface of the Gallente war machine, thousands upon thousands of these attacked left entire solar systems so vulnerable that each system’s defenders could only operate out of a small single space station. The Gallente militia tried to fight back against these guerilla attacks, but the Caldari fighters evaded and eluded the defenders with clever tactics and stratagems such as fitting new prototype cloaking generators or by hitting systems that were not being actively defended.

The Gallente Federation was overwhelmed. Large Caldari fleets were able to fly unmolested through Gallente held territory and forcibly evicted the last few defenders present in many systems across the region. After two short victorious weeks, the Caldari State controlled 90% of the militarized zone and was eagerly looking upon the last ten percent. Desperate and overwhelmed, the upper echelon of the Federation were brought together to formulate a coordinated defensive plan. A highly placed source in the Gallente Federation revealed the defensive plan that would save the Federation from total defeat.
Instead of wasting resources and manpower trying to defend against the numerous guerilla attacks from the Caldari Militia, the Gallente militia redeployed all of their resources to a few key systems that would be defended with constant vigil. These Gallente “fortress systems,” such as Nisuwa, Vlillirier, and Nennamalia, would be fortified and constantly defended while the systems around them crumbled and fell to the Caldari State. While the citizens on the fringes of Federation space may not have appreciated the military’s new orders, the Gallente were able to hold against the Caldari onslaught and, as before, begin to push back. Progress is slow, but a week after holding the Caldari Militia at bay, the Federation had already retaken five core systems.

In order to win a battle, you need pilots and ships. In order to win a war, you require money, money, and more money. And while the Gallente systems were dropping like flies to the Caldari State, the Caldari mega-corporations moved into the militarized zones and opened new and valuable trade routes. The Caldari militia has earned trillions of ISK safeguarding these routes, while the Gallente militia, with their trade routes and sponsors drying up, was becoming poorer and poorer. If the Gallente were not able to establish their own trade routes and recover enough profitable worlds, they would lose the war just because they would not be able to afford the quantities of combat ships required for such a large-scale conflict.

Unfortunately for the Caldari militia, the large profits that could be gained by working for the mega-corporations proved to be the largest downfall in their offensive push. Pilots left the Caldari militia’s military forces in droves for the opportunity to personally earn billions of ISK by working for the mega-corporations. Caldari militia fleets had trouble establishing enough personnel to field large enough fleets to break through the “fortress systems’” defenses. Unaccustomed to losing battles and not realizing how drawn out battles would become, the general Caldari militia began to lose hope. More and more pilots declined to join in large-scale fleet battles. Sensing the decline in morale, the Caldari State leadership proposed and implemented many new fleet doctrines. However, these doctrines were not enough. The Gallente seized upon this weakness and aggressively started to attack Caldari held systems and managed to stem the tide of the Caldari juggernaut. Caldari pilots, ill-equipped to handle defensive operations after a long successful offensive campaign, fell prey to the more adaptable Gallente pilots and their doctrines.

Once again, Innia, home and birthplace of Templis Dragonaors, was under attack. Multiple recent attacks from the Federation had put Templis on their guard and they have started to erect defensive fortifications and prepared the system for a long grueling siege. Even with their diligent preparations, a few deadly sneak attacks damaged over twenty percent of the system’s defenses in a single night. Even before the dust clouds had fully settled, the Gallente were in Innia, rampaging through the few defenses still online. Templis Dragonaors responded and quickly set up defensive positions around the last few defenses. With only ten percent of their original defenses operational and unable to handle the massive influx of Gallente, Templis Dragonaors quickly gathered its few allies to help in its defense. Friendly alliances like Atonement came to help, but Templis Dragonaors was unable to reach the majority of the Caldari militia due to their ultra-nationalist and terrorist nature.

Outnumbered but never willing to surrender a system until the very end, Templis Dragonaors settled in for another grueling battle for their home world. Fighting between the Gallente militia and Templis Dragonaors only experienced pockets of quiet when capsuleers required new ships to throw into the fray. During the first twenty four hours of fighting, Templis Dragonaors were able to hold the Gallente Federation at bay, and were even able to bring about 25% of the system’s defenses online. Sticking to smaller and more agile ships, Templis was able out-run and out-maneuver the larger Gallente cruiser fleets. In the timeframe a Gallente cruiser taskforce could get into position and destroy one defensive fortification, Templis could set up two more strongholds using frigates and destroyers. Templis Dragonaors and their allies had one more large advantage as well, the single State Protectorate space station. Although the Gallente were able to set up a temporary star base in system, it could not repair or refit their warships and was only in system to provide a safe refuge. Coupling Templis Dragonaors’ defensive strategy with the full-fledged space station in system, Templis Dragonaors was the first Caldari alliance to drive a concentrated Gallente offensive back. However, their jubilation was short-lived.

While Templis Dragonaors could match the Gallente Federation’s assault initially, they did not have the manpower to keep up the defense. Hours of constantly defending Innia slowly bore its weight on the Templis pilots. As pilots on both sides of the battle retired for some much-needed sleep, the Gallente Federation brought in their reserve pilots. Templis Dragonaors couldn’t match the steady influx of new Federation pilots. Innia’s fortifications began to fall once again.
This time, there was no stopping the Gallente juggernaut. Even as all the Templis pilots were pressed into active duty, the Federation swept right past the line drawn in the sand the previous day. Ninety percent of defenses destroyed, ninety-five percent, ninety-seven percent of the system’s defenses destroyed. The system was nearing vulnerable status which could allow the Gallente to destroy the final Caldari star base in relative safety and bring in its troop transports to take over the space station. As the beleaguered defenders took their places among Innia’s last bastions, hope appeared over the scans.

A full fifty man Caldari fleet had arrived. The timely arrival of the fleet caused hopes to soar. “We can do it!” was the general consensus within the Templis Dragonaors’ pilot base. A few Templis pilots were skeptical and wondered if the move was political. They wondered why the fleet had waited until the very end to come help, if the friendly fleet had arrived just a few hours later, and Innia would have fell beneath the onslaught. Regardless of individual pilot stances towards the new Caldari fleet, Templis Dragonaors quickly coordinated and shared intelligence with the friendly fleet commander and began defensive operations.

Reverting to their previous defensive strategy, Templis Dragonaors and the new Caldari fleet, led by the BORG alliance, laid waste to the Gallente fleet in system and began to re-erect and repair the immediate defenses around Innia’s Infrastructure Hub. After a few fleet successes, the general Caldari Militia fleet left Innia to re-ship into larger vessels that could compete against the Gallente cruiser fleets which had been rampaging unstoppable through the system. Unfortunately, the friendly fleet arrived too late to stem the tide. Templis Dragonaors had expended too many resources and it exhausted its manpower trying to hold the system by themselves for three days. The joint fleets were able to stall the Gallente fleets for a couple hours but were unable to fully stop the Gallente horde.

Within minutes of the last defensive fortification falling in Innia, the Gallente had re-shipped into larger warships capable of destroying the last defensive bastion in Innia, the Infrastructure Hub. Unable to set up any more defenses or gather enough manpower to contest the warships assaulting the Infrastructure Hub, Templis Dragonaors succumbed to the inevitable. As the Gallente Federation finished off the Infrastructure Hub, Templis was able to evacuate all of its personnel and pilots off of the station with no casualties. A Gallente task force containing dozens of assault shuttles were brought in to secure the State Protectorate station and the ‘flip’ of Innia was complete.

While this is a major setback to Templis Dragonaors, they are extremely resilient and will resurface. Losing a home system usually carries serious ramifications, alliances have been known to disband or entire corps have been known to leave their respective militias after a home system is lost. In Templis Dragonaors’ case, because this was not a new occurrence, they have been well prepared for the loss of their home system if the worst could occur. With strong leadership and such a strong logistics division, this is only considered a minor setback to the Dragonaors. Even now, less than twenty-four hours since the fall of Innia, Templis has begun offensive operations in Innia.

Templis Dragonaors will again be assaulting Innia after losing it to a sustained attack by the Federation. The last time Templis were driven off Innia, the Gallente did not bother to hold the system, and let the Dragonaors retake the system with minimal losses. While the Gallente may be able to provide large amounts of manpower in bursts to take over or ‘flip’ systems, they have historically not been able to effectively defend systems outside their “fortress” systems. Sources within the Federation have declined to answer if they would consider Innia as a fortress system or not.
True to their reputation, the Federation has set up defenses in Innia, but has not maintained them. Three days after the fall of Innia to the Federation, eighty percent of the Gallente defenses are already destroyed. It is unclear whether the Gallente Federation has only taken the system to prove that they can or if they were just slow in moving resources and material into system.

Regardless whether or not the Gallente choose to defend the system, Templis Dragonaors have made it their objective to retake their home system. They have not been disheartened by the sudden loss of their home system, but rather have been invigorated by the amount of Federation pilots and material needed to remove them from Innia. Innia will remain the primary objective of Templis Dragonaors and Innia will be flipped and then defended with all the tenacity this resilient alliance can muster. They are keeping watch for another offensive attempt by the Gallente and will be looking forward to the good fights they will bring.

So, this was my very first attempt at writing RP/fiction. I tried to include all of my experiences that I've had in FW since I've joined CalMil 4 months ago.

I tried to RP'ize most of the things that occur in Factional Warfare so they make sense from a realistic viewpoint.
- System percentage = system's operational defenses
- T3 = Mega corporations trade routes
- Farmers with cloakies - "Guerrilla Fighters"
etc.

Any constructive criticism would be welcome. If you enjoyed it, please say so, I'll try to write more about events through my perspective, though they'll probably be much shorter.

Been in Innia more than you.

Had to post it on an alt or it wouldn't have made sense from a news reporters point of view.

Very nice! I enjoyed that a lot even though some of it is inaccurate or down right silly "talented new pilots Roll". For your first write up it was very well done and as far as being posted in the wrong forum. Seems like there are many references to warfare and tactics/strategy that did accrued.

Keep it up!
