The New Launcher is Wrong for its Target Market

Title says the argument: The new launcher makes EVE look like it is for a younger audience than it really is.

Back in the day, we had a login screen integrated directly into the game's executable. This login showed us an immense and thematic 3D space scene that set the stage for entering the game.

As a new player, the first thing I saw when I started EVE for the first time was the beautiful Trinity login screen. If I was a new player now, all I would see is a messy, ugly, and childish looking launcher that looks totally different from the rest of the game.

The old login screen integrated seamlessly into the feel of the game, and the new launcher sticks out like a sore thumb as something separate from the experience.

But while being separate, it still does damage. The new login screen, with its unattractive 2D backdrop, glowing yellow buttons, and cluttered display packed full of advertisements to buy plex, buy tickets for events, and uninteresting news articles (remember when EVE in-game news was interesting and immersive?) looks like it is designed to grab and hold the attention of young children.

Gone are the awe inspiring 3D space scenes and epic music that set the theme for the experience, now we have a generic, cluttered, launcher.

It is a symptom of the lazy "bro" mentality that is infecting video game culture, and I don't like it.

Things are only impossible until they are not.

Thsi has been brought up time and again, about how the old login screen and theme music WAS a relic from an older era of gaming, but that its existence stood as a reminder of where eve was from, and that it survived. that the screen provided a transition into the game, the music and scene kinda "prepared" you to login.

unfortunately CCP has stated its gone and never coming back, they MIGHT make something similar to how it used to be fro character select, but it would still never be the same.

heck, i would like it if (since the launcher is aparently a necessary evil), it would still come to the login screen with an arcade style "press enter" or whatever to enter the game form the screen, but whatevs.

all we can do is hope CCP finds a way to recreate the old login

Using the Mac launcher which doesn't, for me anyway, remember any previous logins, doesn't support copy & paste, I couldn't help but finding just the right place to bring back the old login screen: http://postimg.org/image/pwyicbxkb/full/

Not sure if that loading bar is supposed to be there but it is after I use the "launcher". Ugh

Wouldn't mind if CCP just scrapped the launcher code up, threw it away, brought back the old login screen and just completely forget all about it.

Ah, one can dream. Oops

I tend to agree, but it's only the first 5 seconds of my interaction with the game. In the grand scheme of things, I think it's a pretty minor issue. From the point of view of an addicted veteran, I'd much rather see improvements in the game itself than on the box art.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Text and news stories for kids, pretty but irrelevant 3d pictures for adults. Got it.

I remember logging in (after the awesome music and 3D screen) and seeing in the right corner feed updates about things like "Titan down in system etc etc." Those were the days... when titan kills were big news Bear

Anyone else remember the graphics before the update? I miss that old block like Megathron model. And the Vindi too. Big smile

Not empty quoting.
