(speculative) What if - the EVE franchise still exists in 20

I regard the game as particularly well designed and robust. While computational hardware keeps expanding in the real world I can clearly see the game evolve to

- fit new preconceptions of what science fiction entails or should entail (for instance, the movie Elysium on design may have an effect later this year)...
- the game may have to evolve to stay competitive with other space opera game franchise that offer similar experiences such as Eve
- the game may have to be redesigned, or evolve in other means, to make use of newly emerging computational technological trends in the next decade

Whatever the case, in the world we are in strange things are happening.

Let's start with a simple premise, and take it in steps of 5, 10 and 20 years. Let's assume Eve Online still exists in the years 2018, 2023 and 2033. My questions to all who are inclined to respond is

- assume the game grows steadily but rapidly. How many steady paying customers could Eve Online have in respective years?
- if so what would a steadily expanded customer base have on the game experience and -design?
- how many star systems would the game have expanded into?
- what completely new game features might have emerged?
- Dust514 is a "parallel game". Would it make sense for CCP to make similar "parallel games" ?

Feel invited to speculate wildly, while maintaining "some level of realism".

I don't think EVE could expand much more. It's already at a level where the individual player is almost meaningless. Noone would want to enter a universe like that.

Would you consider it a reason to leave Eve IF it expanded considerably? At what point would you find the consequences of such expansion disheartening? 50%? 100%? 200%? ten times as big?

Ron Perlman's voice on the opening of every Fallout game.

As long as EVE is running, I'll be playing. And I will still suck at PvP. :)

Why is eve moving towards this micro transactional stuff?
Isn't that an EA strategy?

How come, is there suddenly some new manager working at CCP who sees dollar signs everywhere?

If so why isn't this person pushing to grow the game by adding completely new gameplay experiences inside the franchise?

Please submit evidence of these Eve microtransactions.

CCP is corporation, corporations like making money, they also need it to continue existing and doing corporationie (ey) (y) things.

The individual player was almost always meaningless to some degree. it was always the EXCEPTIONAL who rose to power and influence, and lead those below them to greatness, that is how empires rise and fall.

As to the OP, to be quite honest, it would be damn near impossible for a company to make a space-opera themed sandbox to compete with EVE, because no matter the DEVELOPER CONTENT, they have now over 10 years of SOCIAL, HISTORICAL, and NATURAL development, because the players are the selling point in EVE, to effectively compete another game would have to somehow entice players into a world without the most important resource another game already has, or try to engineer 10 years of social development for players to inherit.

20 might be a bit over the top, but hey I hope it does... although saying I spent 30 years in a game might just have gotten even more weird. Or who knows, maybe by then I'll have met someone and not remembering all of this haha

Of the people you actually see in one system at a time, you only ever look at eve through a little window, how many windows there are doesnt really make much of a difference if the concentration is the same.

double the player base, double system limit double number of systems!

Pro-tip for you as well: leave eve-uni asap and find a real corp instead of hanging around a collection of numbnuts.

I can see the persistent world of New Eden existing as a back drop to a myriad of games that interact, much as Dust is attempting.
I am still convinced that gamers have always dreamed of having a dedicated game that is really good at one thing that interacts with other games like it. That is why I hump Dust's leg despite not owning a PS or even playing FPS really. But it's the concept that is so ahead of it's time.
Guys that like flight sims would love to have a world where they can bomb guys that are really into driving tanks over guys that really like FPS. Having dedicated, and therefore higher quality games that cater to specific genres but are linked to a larger world is brilliant, and I honestly think the future of war gaming.
At the risk of fellating CCP here, I think their vision is ahead of anyone else. But being the first usually means failing while others steal your idea and do better. I see people pan Dust because it's nowhere near the shooter CoD is. But CoD is nowhere near the overall game in at least attempt to be something more, that Dust is.

I am a bittervet though, so I will say that I think Eve will get easier, safer, and more WoW-like. If I didn't they'd take away my bittervet retirement pension and booster discount card at Walgreens.

Yes and a lot harsher than now. (ship fits and mods etc) I actually started a little late, early 2004 but I remember seeing around 5/6k online. (not this char) Lots of systems with no one in at all.
