RPGs have changed a lot since the old days. I remember old books being filled with hundreds of random tables, arbitrary limitations and restrictions, and little if any emphasis on building a character (as in something with personality and history). Modern times are more interesting; there's a few core universal mechanics applied to everything to keep the rules on the simpler side while doing more to support stories.

Played FATE for the first time a few days ago, it was a really good experience.
