I lost a Raven (Navy Issue) yesterday..

So I guess I need some advice.

I'm quite new to this game, so I already know that I'm a noob and that I did something stupid. But I'd like to know if anyone could give me some tips on how to prevent an event like what happened to me yesterday.

I don't have that much time to play EVE, so I spent some money on Plex, traded it for ISK and bought a couple of ships, some equipment and skill training books to be able to advance a bit faster. The day before yesterday, I reached the point where I could pilot a Raven and I couldn't resist, I bought one. A brand new Raven (Navy issue) was mine and I dubbed her INSS Valiant. I had already realised I was not in any position to pilot it well or fight with it well, so I was considering just leaving it at the station where I had bought it until I had advanced further. With hindsight, I should have done that. But no..

I put minimal weapons, ammo and other fittings on it, while also buying better stuff that I was unable to install yet and ended up collecting it. Everything went fine until the very last item. It was 20 jumps from my position, so I spent a lot of time just moving from one system to another. Then, just as I was finishing a bathroom break (nothing had happened for hours of moving around) I heard a noise. A bad noise. I was being shot at. Some bad guys had (almost literally) caught me with my pants down. I rushed over and noticed a heck of a lot of damage incoming, more than I could handle. I didn't fully understand what was going on. I was admittedly in low-sec (0.3) but was under the impression that it'd not be allowed for me to be attacked except during a duel and I had, being AKF, not accepted such a challenge. I also didn't understand why my ship wasn't just moving on, it was just one or two more jumps to my destination and, hopefully, safety. I disengaged the auto pilot and tried to jump through the stargate, but got some kind of warning about factional warning and/or the area being in dispute. In hindsight, I don't even think my ship was moving anymore and that I was a sitting duck.. Meanwhile my shields were being destroyed fast. I had to do something. I tried to buy myself some time by firing back. I think that chased one of them away, but there were still two others and my weapons were pretty poor, doing about 100 dps if I recall correctly.. Before I was able to do anything more, not only my ship was destroyed, but I was pod-killed to boot. Great. Thanks for going easy on a newbie and congrats on defeating someone three-on-one when I would have had trouble dealing with only one. If they were able to take all the equipment I was carrying, they made about 37 million for a two minute fight.. But hey, as long as I learn something from this, I only wasted a few hours and a little money. I'm not ashamed of being defeated, they won fair and square and there were three of them, all three with battleships, if I recall correctly, at least two of them had Panthers. So even if I had been better and had had better weapons and equipment, I probably still would have lost..

So, what did I do wrong, other than taking my ship out while not having the skills to pilot it well and then taking it into low-sec space?

From what I gather from the wiki, it seems there are areas which are in dispute and in which certain nationalities can attack me just for being a Caldarian (although there is a notice information on this topic is outdated). Of course, if that is how it is, that would have been useful to know before I ended up there without warning.. Why didn't I get a warning planning the route?

How do I know which areas to avoid?

Can they also attack me in high-sec when I have a certain standing towards them?

I noticed that after having done certain missions, my standing with certain nationalities may drop. Should I avoid those missions as it makes me fair game everywhere?

I just checked the map and looked up the system where I lost my ship and got killed, but I can't even find any information about it being in dispute, all it tells me is that there have been a number of kills and a number of pod kills. A screenshot on the wiki shows the information that a certain system is disputed will be shown when you enter the system, but naturally I'd much rather not end up there in the first place. Does the game give you a warning before you jump into a disputed area, but did I miss that due to being AFK? Or is this unavoidable?

Is there even such a thing as disputed areas?

Finally, now that I am asking (belated) questions, does anyone have any further advice on how to proceed? Should I give up on piloting battleships at all until I am a lot further in the game? Should I get a different battleship? Should I join a faction?

Well, first a few general things that it seems you have missed about EVE: Bigger ships aren't better. Smaller ships can, sometimes easily, defeat larger ships, and frigates can take down battleships if piloted right.

So, low security space: It's not unsafe if you're prepared, but auto-piloting through low-sec is ... yeah, you saw youself. You can set your autopilot to attempt to stay in high security space, but if it has to go through low-sec, it will. Generally, I wouldn't use the AP, since it's slower, less safe, and I prefer to be at my computer if I am undocked / unsafe at all.
The thing about low-sec, as opposed to hi-sec, is that there aren't police forces active there, but only sentries on gates and stations (Which are tank-able, so attackers can plan for them in a way that put them out of the fight effectively). Thus, pilots can murder unprepared travellers that walk into their trap.
There are a few ways to go around this. One would be to plan better ahead: You can check ship & pod kills in the EVE map, and so avoid systems where it is likely that there are ongoing combat, and you can set your AP to completely avoid going through systems where pod-killings has gone on. Other ways are to make a plan that enables you to go through, either by different mechanics of not getting caught, or simply by driving them off / making you a too pricey meal. Those last require some knowledge of mechanics, such as warp disrupters and their counters, or cloaks, and so on.

A word in general: People can shoot you everywhere. It's all a matter of consequences. In hi-sec, they'll lose their ship if they have no just reason (such as war, killrights or flagged actions). In low-sec, they might be attacked by gateguns. In null-sec, they might actually own the place and make the law (Making you the "illegal" intruder). In Wormholes, they might inhabit the area, or they might be wanting to burn your home down.
In short, any area is dangerous for the unprepared or those unwilling to fight and/or understand the game mechanics. Low-sec is just dangerous in a more obvious fashion.

As for your standing questions, it seems like it was warning you for faction warfare systems, but that mostly matters if you're in FW, which you aren't ... If your standings towards a faction is low (Like, below -5), their faction police will attack and chase you around (This isn't the same as Concord, btw), but that shouldn't be a dispute message.

I probably missed a number of things, but it's a little difficult finding the questions in your wall-of-text, and I haven't had my wake-up coffee yet which puts me at a severe disadvantage.

- In lowsec anyone can shoot you without Concord punishing attacker.
- When buying stuff, always check where it is and if there are any lowsec or nullsec systems on route. You can do this by setting destination to station through right click menu.
- Don't fly anything bigger than battlecruiser before you're ready.
- Don't fly battleships before you can use all T2 modules.
- Don't fit frigate/cruiser sized modules to your battleship.

And yes, game should give you a warning when you try to jump into lowsec system. You've probably disable that message at some point. You can reset this setting through settings ("Reset settings" tab if remember correctly).

According to killmail you didn't really have a chance in that situation. Black ops, T3, Prophecy.

Forget about battleships for now. You dont have the the support skills nor knowledge, and you buy a RNI. No offense but thats just plain stupid. Stick to cruisers and battlecruisers for now and TRAIN THOSE SUPPORT SKILLS.
Regarding your loss, when you set a destination, you can select between shortest (which can take you through lowsec) and safest route. Whenever you're flying such an expensive ship, never fly on autopilot. Even in highsec, people will suicide gank you.

Thanks for the replies, this game is a bit overwhelming to me, so many options, so many things to keep track of.. So any helpful advice is appreciated!

I'll certainly concentrate even more on skill training and leave the big ships alone for a while.. It was a waste of a fine ship.. But it is sad that this is most of what I am doing now, just logging in to set new skill training goals and logging back out..

At which point can you have the minimum skills in order to function in this game? I read in another thread that even 5 million or more skill points is considered low? I am currently at 1.5 million or so..

Also, can anyone tell me, why was I unable to move through the gate? Was this a factional thing, the system being in dispute and me being of the wrong nationality, or what? All I wanted was to get out, but I couldn't and I didn't even have the time to set a new destination, back the way I came, it all happened so fast..

Yeah, that was comforting at least, to know I was outclassed and outgunned. Interesting to see the details, I thought there were at least two Panthers, but there was only one..

I should have left that ship in the garage, obviously.. I can afford it, I just can't fly it properly..

I notice they are wondering why I didn't fit it properly, well, heck, cos I was unable to, I didn't have the skills to even do that. So yeah, I realise I have no business flying around in it, I didn't fully realise that even outside of null-sec there could be situations, other than a suicide attack, where I didn't stand a chance. I grossly overestimated the value of my much bigger shields and figured I'd be able to move past any trouble makers..

EDIT: ah, wait, they're wondering why I didn't fit more of the one item I was able to fit, I had one tech II shield recharger, the rest were tech I. Yeah, I was planning on replacing everything anyway, so I didn't even bother buying more of the tech II ones, I had one of them lying around and fitted it.. I was planning on one run, to collect all the equipment, then wait until I had trained enough to fit everything.. Unfortunately, the maiden flight of the INSS Valiant became its last..

That was probably because of Weapons flag. When you have that you can't jump to other system.

Hmm, I'm starting to wonder if I really made the mistake of firing back at them before I tried to jump manually.. I was pretty certain I didn't, that my ship was stopped in space and refusing to jump, but it all happened so fast.. Maybe it was just a little distance away from the gate and just out of range of it and I fired back, therefore losing my option to jump away.. But I'm not sure I could've made it out of there even if I hadn't fired back and had jumped through, my shields were dropping so fast..

Is there any other reason the gate would not have let me through, if all that had happened was that I was being fired upon and I hadn't fired back yet?

Also don't go the "log in, set new skill, log off" route either. That way you never learn anything about EVE's mechanics and how to actually fly your ship.

Pretty much immediately upon finishing the tutorials. If you're into PVP, then maybe 2-3 days to get tackle skills. Might take longer to find friends to fly with.

The thing is, bigger ships are not better, bigger ships are far less forgiving than smaller ships to poor skills an bigger ships are a hell of a lot more painful to lose.

Stick with frigates until you've learnt the ropes, until you have basic skills, until you've run all the tutorials and know at least the basics of what you're doing. Then move up to cruisers. There's no reason to race to battleships, they're slow, expensive, unforgiving and downright hard to use. The smaller ships are fun to fly and perfectly usable.

My char's over a year old now, I still can't fly a single battleship.

As for why you couldn't jump, it's likely they had you webbed and warp scrambled (though can't tell for sure from the km). If you were out of range of the gate (2.5km iirc) then you wouldn't have been able to jump, you'd have been moving incredibly slowly and you wouldn't have been able to warp away.

Ofcourse tey kill you in low sec , wy not?

Even in high sec your arnt safe , and ravens tend to be bad at pvp anyway

Stay safer in high sec for now , and make some isk , join a good player corp that can help you out

Also: Welcome to eve , the only mmo where actully hurts to die , thats wy we love it.

Yeah, I plan to do more missions, but right now I am stuck at repeating the level 1 missions over and over again and that is just a drag.. I don't have that much free time either, so I do at least that so I make use of the account, it will benefit me later. I don't mind running training missions, but I'd like to do different ones. I'm not interested in mining or trade, I find it is really boring to just watch that ship go round and round, firing its lasers.. And I don't need to to make ISK if I can just trade in plex. I also don't gain any experience or whatever..

Is there anything I am missing in advancing to level II missions, or is it just a matter of standing?

I'm actually more bothered by having spent a few hours flying around trying to collect all that equipment and then losing it, having nothing to show for that effort, than by the loss of the RNI. It was mostly really, really stupid of me to be flying it in the first place and it was not that expensive, I am fortunate enough to be able to afford it. Not that I'd do the same thing again, mind you.. Blink

I'm currently mostly using a Destroyer, a Corax. I have a Drake as well, but I think I'm leaving it docked for now too..

That's discouraging.. The learning curve is pretty steep, isn't it? Ugh

I have no idea at what distance I was and am actually a bit surprised at how inept I was at fighting back. I didn't even do some of the things I know I could have done, I didn't even bother to try to manoeuvre or set a new course or whatever.. I'm really starting to think I messed up by firing back, thereby locking the gate for myself, leaving me with no option but to try and fight my way out. I didn't even realise at the time I was outmatched that badly.. I knew I was in trouble, big trouble, but.. Well yeah..

Went ratting in Low Sec a couple of days after I got my 1st Dessie, got killed soon afterwards, went back to low sec to rat again and a player actually chatted to me and gave me some good advice/direction.

The key is to get into a Player corp that will help you out as a new player, its the other players of EVE who have the knowledge of the game.

I had actually decided against joining any alliance for now, because I believed that'd make me more of a target. If that alliance is at war, or gets into a war, their enemies can shoot me without Concord intervention, right? Turns out, going it alone is not that great an idea either.. Roll

You misunderstand me. That's by choice, not because of the skill curve.
I'm trying to reiterate the point that there's no good reason to race for a battleship. It's not a 'ok, now I can play' point. It's not something that you have to do to be able to be useful.

This isn't an MMO where you need the biggest ship as soon as possible (as in say Guild Wars where you want the best armour/weapons as fast as possible). The biggest ships are not equivalent to the best gear, they're just another option.

Ships are tools, you fly them for a particular purpose. I know people who have been playing 5 or more years that only fly frigates because that's what they have the most fun in.

Try cruisers and L2 missions. Should be a little less painful than L1s (which are rather boring)

I'll stick to my destroyer for now, no need to risk another ship I can't even fit properly, but how do I get to L2 missions? I seem to be a bit stuck and am choosing to do other things than re-running the same missions.. Do I just need to get my standing higher or do I need to finish all L1 missions or something?

Join a player run corp, don't really matter if it's on in high, low or null, but having friends to help with advice and just to do stuff with makes it a lot more fun to play with few skill points.
