The hell should I be doing?

So... Just resubbed after quite some hiatus. Logged in, warped back to my favorite mission hub, and started doing some l4's... So I jump into a mission with my domi, remember rails are trash, and pull out my ogres. I go to grab a soda a bit later and come back to find all of my drones gone. After losing several more drones, I started realizing that npc's are insta-aggroing my drones. What gives? Are gallente crap now? I mean seriously... Unless my drones moved at lightning speed, how am I supposed to use them effectively at all? I lost a drone or two each mission before, but now anything but light drones get destroyed before they make the trek back...

When did this happen? And if drones are now just not viable for missions, what the hell should I be doing?

Awhile back. Probably best to peruse the devblog page to catch up on changes after a hiatus.

And the dominix changed too recently. It's a kick butt mission boat.

The only other word: Sentries

TBH Ogres were always crap for missions even before the NPC aggro changes.

I gotta say I also find it funny that you come back from a long time off, and the first thing you do is try a fully AFK mission.

Yeah, oddly enough the Dominix is a pretty darn top notch mission boat right now. But Ogres, as always, are pretty awful for it.

There isn't a true AFK mission boat anymore. You have to fly them. But if you're willing to do that, not much has changed. Try this or something similar:

Honestly only light drones should be used. Gardes will take care of almost everything including close orbiting cruisers and sometimes even frigs

AFK drones don't work anymore. Learn to manage them and you'll be fine. And yeah, Sentries ftw. Reproc those heavies and use the minerals to build DDAs. Lol

This, this, 1000 times this. Domi is the best low budget runner right now. Garde II's are stupid overpowered now.

ccp wanted to get rid of that kind of game play. that said if you fit a micro jump drive and use sentry drones you can pretty much keep doing the whole afk thing...

Wasn't really trying to afk, just had to get a soda... But anywho, I was already looking into sentry drones anyway, was training them up before my hiatus. Ogres did take forever to do anything, consider how freakin' slow they moved. Either way, thanks for the feedback guys.

(Edit: On another note, I'm fine with drone management, it's just fairly impossible to use heavies. Lights and even mediums are decent for frigs and cruisers, and can generally kill them before they become a huge issues. Seems like theres really no reason TO use heavies now which is kinda sad. Luckily I never stockpiled them, heh.)

Only time I can think of in which Heavies would be useful is in a mobile PVP setup where you wouldn't wanna sit and babysit the sentries (or it's not practical to do so).

low slot damage mod. affects all damage drones, not just sentries like the old terrible sentry damage augmenters do, and larger effect too.

Domi has more grid than it used to have, you can actually have 5x350mm, a med cap booster, an mwd and a large rep., ie there is lots to actually try with them these days.

Yeah, definately enjoying things more now. Mission running used to be so boring... I've been clearing MUCH quicker now. And yeah it does seem like it's easier to fit more on my domi now. Thanks all for the help! :D

Yeah, we all now that heavies are useless for missions, but CCP ignores this point for now.

Haven't seen a realistic use for heavies outside of the old triple-rep Myrmidon for PVP; in PVE, the new threat table the rats use to switch targets leaves them wide open for catching full aggro. These days, a good drone boat tactic is to get to sentry optimal range, drop sentries, orbit them, and collect them if they catch aggro - or use a remote rep on any sentry that catches aggro, because the rat AI seems to rank remote reps as a higher threat level than drones.

Heavy drones do come in handy. I use a zero waste/zero take alt to reprocess them for the minerals to build new lights, mediums, and sentries as seed for T2 models. :)
