Bringing Back The Snipers! :D

Disclaimer! I am very new to EVE compared to most people and admit I have very little PvP experience and zero fleet experience. I am also not suggesting this is a good idea or should be used by CCP in any way! I am just wondering if it would work (I am sure there will be problems with it) and if not, why!

Okay! So from what I have gathered from people, sniping is no longer used in fleet battles because of some new on grid probing which allows you to warp to targets more than 150km away... or some distance like that! If this first part is wrong let me know!

My idea to fix this is allow ships to fit a module that disrupts on grid probing only! It would have to have a range which would be determined and if people wanted to make it more visual, could even have some kind of bubble effect like... Bubbles! :D But the point of this would be sniper fleets would have some kind of defence against probing! Then maybe it would become a race to see if the sniper fleet could do enough damage before the enemy fleet took out their probing disruptor ship and was able to zoom in and wreck the day!

I think having a way to combat a game mechanic is a lot better than just removing it!

Things to consider:

  • Maybe not have the probing disruptor be a module so that half the fleet doesn't have it... MAYBE make it a cruise class ship or something :O I dunno you decide!

  • I have no idea how fast super fast cruisers or frigates can go so maybe just eliminating insta warp with probing is not enough... Is that situation in the EVE is real trailer possible?

  • The Rokh is the second most pretty ship and being able to use it again would pretty much be the best thing ever for anyone ever so remember to think about that when deciding!

  • Please do not worry about being rude! If this is a horrible idea let me know and I will not post another balance related topic for at least a month!

The 150+ km warpin is oldsauce. The on-grid probing requires only that the prober put his probes within 0.5 AU of where the fleet battle is taking place, warp to the sniping ships, and then have his gangmates warp to him. It's actually a lot harder to do in the thick of battle than just sending someone's interceptor out to where the snipers are to act as the warp-in. Even if the ceptor doesn't get there before the snipers warp off, they're still effectively removed from the fight. I don't see probing as being as big a problem as you make out.

Yet the probe changes came at the same time as snipers were reduced to a novelty at best .. was that merely coincidence?

Extending the minimum range to 200-250km is more than enough to allow snipers a place again, they'll still be probed down in a heartbeat but the extra time afforded by warp-to's manoeuvring should give them time to do their thing.

Another option would be to remove range information from probe results when below 500km or so .. manually checking ship names or clicking warp-to furiously would then be required .. again potentially giving enough time to do ones business.

Honestly, adding a module that makes one immune from probing, whether it be all probing or just on-grid probing, would be very overpowered.

Possibly more reasonable would be a ship class that disrupts on-grid probing, such as a Heavy Interdictor uses a warp disruption field generator, only those specific ships would be able to fit probing disruptors, and the range would have to be very short (like bubble range for HICs is).

Alternatively, probing mechanics for SHIPS could be changed so that sniper fleets have adequate time to align, shoot, and warp to a new snipe spot, before being probed. That means probably 20 seconds probe time, which is about half way in between old probing times and new probing times.

Also, another option is to operate sniper ships within 150km of the hostile fleet. This removes the need for fitting extreme amounts of sensor boosters and tracking computers/enhancers, and lets the ships add more tank. By old definitions, this would not be a TRUE sniper fleet, but the result and strategy is the same. It does, however, require a good deal more coordination by the fleet, because at best they will be operating in a 20-30km window, where if they got too close they'd be 0wned, and if they got too far away they'd be 0wned. Not a lot of room for error in this fleet model.

They just removed un-probable ships setups. They are not going to add it back in.

    Dear OP,

You may wish to leave open the possibility of altering your position after 1400mm Arty Tornados melt your ship collection a few times in the not to distant future Blink

    >_> I don't think any of the new BCs could beat a BS... Maybe I'm wrong! But having zero, one, or two extra turrets doesn't seem like it would overcome having 1/5th the tank :D (obviously most fights are not 1v1 but just saying!)

I will try a Naga against Tornado if you want though! Sounds like fun :D
