" am I going to get killed for fun?"
omg yes.
consider ANYONE you encounter someone that will destroy you.
at this point I suggest you join the militia of you choice and find yourself cool small gang pvp.
this game is a LOT more then solo mission running.

Also just killing the NPC in the belts is quite a profitable hobby.

Any pilot can be 'ready' for low sec the moment they're comfortable with the game, and understand the risks/inevitability involved.
...IF they have a corp that will help guide them enough. They key word there is "enough." Hopefully your corp has some guys who spend a good amount of energy on you, and help you find ways to keep busy/entertained/useful/pointed in the right direction.
Everyone starts out bewildered, and ignorant to the nuances of nullsec, so the onus really does fall to the corp to help you become an asset.

As a new guy, one of the best ways to make money that reduces risk, and minimizes SP prerequisites is exploration sites. Another good one is salvage, vulturing on your corp-mates' finished sites. Asteroid rats are a possibility, best tackled in a battlecruiser, but there's risk there in the form of other players; In my opinion it's easier to get caught unawares while ratting, compared to the aforementioned options.

You also need to recognize why people go to low-sec in the first place, when high-sec is a safer, cheaper option. Have that conversation with your corpmates to try and figure out 'what's in it for me.' If you can't find a real reason to be low-sec instead of high-sec, you've gotta either figure that out your goals, or go back to high-sec. Low-sec is not a logical progression, in the manner that other MMO's tend to offer. You don't graduate into low-sec. It's merely an option that offers a different set of rules and environment. It has some benefits, and some counterbalancing costs. Do what makes sense for what you want.

You could get killed. Just do whatever brought you there in the first place I would suggest. No point living in fear of what might happen..

Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first.

We're gods, we can never be killed. Sometimes the vessel that transports our mortal coil is exploded, but even if totally down on your isk luck, the station manger will provide you with a new ship to get back on your feet with because he's scared of you.. because you're a god.

OK, this is going back a few years, you probably couldn't do it now. But I knew a guy who had quite a nice low sec business going and used nothing but a noob ship for months.

Well its a little more expensive than the noob ship, but this video by Jonny Pew shows a t1 data/relic frigate that makes up its cost from a single lowsec site.

I noticed OP mentioned a system with 0.1 security rating. The OP should understand that PVE in somewhat higher sec level systems (0.4 or 0.3) is somewhat easier. And heck yes you are ready, and heck yes you will die. Lots! There are two very simple objectives I would recommend a new player in lowsec:

PVE: Devise ships and fits to kill every type of rat encountered in the belts. The Battleships may prove a challenge!
PVP: Explode lots, learn from your mistakes, and get friendly with your killers if you are looking to join a lowsec corp.

Persistance and a good sense of humour go a long way. When I shoot an obvious newbie I am always open for a chat as long as people stay polite. Most are actually eager to learn. Today I shot a Rifter and a Merlin, and in the subsequent conversation asked why they did not warp away, as I landed 40Km off and had to burn to get in range. The answer? Hurricanes look cool and I am training for one, I wanted to see how badass it was. Also I heard you can beat them in frigates if you get below their tracking.

I am so going to recruit that guy! Blink

EDIT: lowsec has missions too. They aren't harder, just a little better in terms of payout. The main draw is the difference in standing increases. Basicly you can climb mission levels faster that way.
