Merlin loadouts

Hi all,

I'm a player returning to the universe of EvE. I'm previously a Gallente pilot as I loved my drones. However, this time I want to try something different and so I'm going for Caldari and missiles.

As a bit of a noob I wonder if someone could point me in the direction of a good merlin fit. I'm starting as a brand new character so my skills are pretty much at zero.

I've had a scout around and all the fits I find seem to be T2 stuff, which obviously is a little out of my reach at this moment. I'm not familiar with what skills I need as a missile boat but those I can research and learn. This merlin will be mainly used for PVE rather than PVP.

I also understand that this is shield tanking as opposed to active armour tanking which I employed with my Gallente ships, that's something else I need to learn.

I've been looking at the various different weapons and I don't really understand what is good and what is bad.
I want to stay in the merlin for a while rather than rushing to cruiser/BC/BS.

Maybe missiles aren't the way to go in a frig? Maybe I should be looking at close range combat and using blasters? I don't know which blasters are better/worse so I'm open to suggestions.

I have EveMon and EFT and I'm playing around with it, but some starting tips would be really useful.

Blasters, AB, passive shield tank.

Just about all of the Tech I sub-caps have been rebalanced/realigned, so the Merlin (among others) no longer have split weapon systems.

If you're wanting a missile/rocket platform, look at the Kestrel.

Here's a basic suggestion; with the shield booster off, it's cap stable (though that is with my skills):

[Kestrel, Tech I PvE]
Muon Coil Bolt Array I
Muon Coil Bolt Array I

Experimental 1MN Afterburner I
Small F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction
Small C5-L Emergency Shield Overload I
Limited Kinetic Deflection Field I

Upgraded 'Malkuth' Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile
Upgraded 'Malkuth' Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile
Upgraded 'Malkuth' Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile
Upgraded 'Malkuth' Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile

Small Bay Loading Accelerator I
Small Bay Loading Accelerator I
[empty rig slot]

You would obviously change the hardener and ammo type as needed for the mission/rats.

Thanks Cephelange, that gives me a great place to start. I can look at each module and see what it does and adapt from there.
I will look at the kestrel in more detail now.
