I have been training mostly core certificates and skills on my alt and have several to level V.

I have been sticking to racially relevant weapons training so far.

Certificate focus has been "Core - Navigation - Gunnery".

I will also train Electronic Warfare and Thermodynamics after finishing my core skills.

1) Are there other skills that are an absolute must for PVP.

2) Should I ignore racial weapons and focus on a specific weapon type for PVP?

3) To start I will not train rigging for basic Hi-sec ganking.

Can anyone provide insight into gank specific fits and ships to start with for a capsuleer with ~1mio sp

Thanks!

Look into the curiously awesome arty Thrasher if you want to stick with Minmatar, it's a one shot pod popping machine.

If you want to be efficient the Gallente Catalyst is flavour of the month for ganking, probably due to the silly amounts of DPS it can push out in the hands of a well skilled player. Bang for buck it's probably one of the best throwaway ships in the game.

You might find minerbumpings page on training gank alts handy, it's mostly geared for Catalyst pilots, but some of the info is relevant no matter what you fly.

With reference to the rigging skills, a couple of cheap weapons rigs are often the difference between success and failure.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The Catalyst is great, essentially just have all light blasters in the highs, so train t2 blasters as much as you can for those. Also train thermodynamics to at least 3 so you can pump out an extra 50 dps or so by overheating all the blasters.

Then in the mids you can have a scram and a ship scanner as well to check for tank/valuable mods. In the lows have the very obvious 3 magstabs.

That is of course for suicide ganking, for actual PvP you'd want a much more well-rounded set of skills.
