Semi-AFK mining Q

Ok so I can't play in evenings but my job allows me to do some passive mining. Basically its not afk but I might be called away.

So I am mining, no rats, but my boss needs me. Worst case scenario im called away then rats get me.

my thoughts:

Prototype cloak in a high slot, no mining drones. This way I should be able to cloak when called away from desk and just sit there. This will be in a 0.5 system so no player worries.

I'd be in an abaddon with a tank.

So lets say I get unlucky with rats while afk, and my cloak is gone for some reason.

Can a tanked out abaddon maintain passive tank against .5 rats? Should I stick to .8?

I'm really confused but I'm going to give you a tip passed down from highsec carebear gurus that will make your ship invulnerable:

The more the mods cost, the better your ship will be.

Honestly, I'd probably say don't bother. The amount of mining you will get from a battleship in high sec while mostly AFK is dear nothing. If you are going to do it though, just dock when your boss calls. You can click to dock, and 99% of the time you will dock without issues (the 1% being if you get stuck on a rock).

Mining in an abaddon? I don't even...

A mining barge or exhumer with 5 hobgoblin I's can take care of any rat from 0.05 up.

Your biggest threat is gankers of course so maybe you should fly in a skiff with two adaptive invulnerability II's.

With a skiff with two of those, you'll have over 50,000 EHP. Most gankers won't waste their time and rats probably won't kill you for maybe 30 minutes.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

IMO, a cheap fit Retriever and always have combat drones out. Keep your clone and fit cheap so when you do get ganked, it's no big deal.

Mining Veldspar in a 1.0 system with a Venture is probably more profitable than mining in a Abaddon anywhere.

use a procuror if you cant afford much and dont have muchbarge training

proc can tank 0.5 rats and 99% of player gankers wont even touch you either

While I do enjoy mining in Battleships on occasion (I have a mining Rokh myself) simply because it ticks off pretty much everyone who isn't a miner, it isn't the most efficient way to mine.

If you are going to be AKF or even semi-AKF, use a Skiff. The drones will take care of any rats and most gankers won't even give you a second look.

For semi-afk mining like you wish to do, it's Skiff, Mackinaw, Procurer, or go home.

Mining in a battleship will net you a trivially small amount of ore for each flight out to the belt. You will not be jetcan mining when semi-afk, otherwise you'll come back after an hour's diversion to find your half a day's work gone due to the can popping (or being stolen, or flipped, or …).

If you don't want to train to fly an Exhumer, stick with the Procurer. A retriever cannot tank hisec belt rats without human intervention. I have seen many retrievers and covetors blown up by belt rats because the pilot went AFK for three minutes.

An Abaddon might be able to tank belt rats passively if you have good shield skills. Your mining output will be pathetic to the point of not even being worth the effort. You could take that same Abaddon and run L3 missions using drones as DPS for better income given the amount that an Abaddon can mine. At which point you'd be better off flying a Dominix, since the Dominix gets bonuses to drones.

The Mackinaw will allow you to stay in belt longer, the Skiff can tank better. Both can carry a full flight of light drones which will be more than sufficient to drive off belt rats the next time you return your attention to the game.

To restate the pros and cons, the pros of using an Abaddon are:

  • You might be able to tank belt rats if your shield skills are advanced

The cons:

  • The yield of an Abaddon will never match the yield of a mining barge
  • The capacity of an Abaddon is barely enough to carry a full cycle of the fitted mining lasers
  • By flying an Abaddon, you are forcing yourself into a "mine one cycle, return to station" style of mining
  • People will laugh at you

Contrast this to semi-AFK mining in a Procurer, the pros:

  • Your yield will ensure that the attention you pay to the game is rewarded
  • The capacity of a procurer is sufficient to gather an entire hisec asteroid
  • The capacity of a procurer ensures you can stay in space mining longer than you'll be warping to station and back to belt

The cons:

  • You have to train to fly mining ships
  • Your PvP friends will laugh at you when they see "Mining Barge" on your EVEboard

If you're going to semi-afk mine I'd recommend keeping one eye on the screen. Otherwise dock.

I don't know jack about mining, but I would like to know what it is that you do so I can get a job that allows me to play video games.
